I appreciate why you say something like this, but if a professional scout wrote off a guy because of other individual players that played at that institution before him he'd be out of a job very quickly. 

 

Every individual player has his own set of traits. Sometimes coaching at a particular program will "develop" specific traits over others, but you scout the individual beyond just his college coaching.

It's not so much that as the type of guy the university recruits. They seem to prefer footwork over functional strength. Then when they get to the pros, they can't handle bigger, stronger pass rushers. A recent example is Cedric Ogbuehi. The Bengals are finding out that his particular skillset does not translate well to the NFL. The same thing happened to Joeckel. Jake Matthews has been the best of the recently drafted Aggies' OT's and even he hasn't lived up to the hype.

If they were properly using analytics, they would know what profiles and what schools to find them.

 

More Linders, fewer Joeckels.

 

It's pretty apparent, particularly with the highest "rated" prospects, that the current scouting profile methodologies are suspect.

 

Perhaps it's a s simple as correlation doesn't imply causation, and ignoring that axiom in the hope you've found gold.

Fair point.

 

Interesting to note that Joeckel and Matthews were there under a different head coach than Ogbuehi and players coming out now though.
