USMNT-Mexico Friendly On Wednesday

#41

Quote:I was serious though....the term "friendly" just bugs me because I believe they should call it what it essentially is - an exhibition/ pre-season game. To me labeling it something else just reeks of faux sophistication to hear Americans call it that. JMO.

It would be if you saw an American coming down the street (in anytown USA) and he asked you "How's the craic" (Irish term)....instead of asking "whats up"?r
My god dude, it's called that because that's what they are freaking called in that sport. You whine more than a two year old.

You could say it's like some dude from Jersey who is a fan of the iggles and fat boy kelly coming onto the Jags message board all day long calling himself a Jags fan.

No because in America with the NFL, you can find fans of any of the 32 teams, anywhere in the country. I'm not a fan of the iggles, and live much closer to NY Jets/ Giants country than anything.

If native Euro people were watching the NFL in England for instance, and the game was a pre season exhibition game, then they would be fine labeling it a "friendly". Its their term, not ours. We say "exhibition" game when speaking of that type. Unless of course, we're just trying to be poseurs and pretend like we're from overseas.

Looking at his past posts in soccer threads gives it away.  He doesn't care, just wants to push buttons.

How much $$$ are people paying to go watch the exhibition soccer game in Everbank in a few months?

Funny, because I'll bet the same people who complain about the NFL charging regular prices for those pre season games, have little issue paying high $$$ dollars to see a soccer "friendly". Maybe its because they convince themselves in their own heads that its not an "exhibition" its a "friendly". See?

Soccer friendlies don't feature second and third string players in the second half. Also, while the result may not directly affect World Cup qualification it does affect international rankings which are used to seed the teams in the World Cup draw. So the result of a friendly is nowhere near as inconsequential as an NFL preseason game.

You know that TMD doesn't care anything about it, this happens to be the thread he can be contrary in. The daily post count must remain at average.

I paid $120 for two tickets in the 100's sections.

DragonFury is correct....there is still a ton of meaning to Friendly's, and many of the players are fighting for the spot on the national team.

$120 each, or 2 together?

I doubt I'd pay that much for it. But to each's own....

2 together.  I went to the last one and the atmosphere was great.  There is nothing like that many people to come together and support a team for your country.

Every sport has a term for their exhibition games. Soccer is no different, I think it's a bit silly that it bothers you to be honest.

Soccer "friendly's" or "exhibitions" are entirely different particularly when it comes to these international games, and even more so Yanks-El Tri.

You think a lot of things I say are silly so that doesn't surprise me...

"friendly" is a term created by the people on the other side of the pond meaning exhibition game, essentially. THEM using that term doesn't bother me. US using it does. We're poseurs if we use it, they aren't. Its their word.

Its no different than the way English people refer to your [BAD WORD REMOVED] as your "bum". 2 different words, meaning the same thing. But American's are so caught up in terms that they latch on to the way Eurpoeans say stuff as if it has different meaning if you say it the way they say it.... Thats why that toilet paper commercial with that lady saying "bums" 75 times is so acceptable to Americans on our TV, - if it was just some lady continuously saying "[BAD WORD REMOVED]" people would think its disgusting, even though ITS THE SAME THING!!

The poseurs act as if calling it a "friendly" (rather than "an exhibition") changes its importance or something.

This is hilarious. You referring to others as a poseur that is..

I personally am looking forward to the FRIENDLY very much. I relish most opportunities to watch professional sports at the Bank.
