We can debate whether the Jaguars have signed a true difference maker...or for that matter, whether the Jaguars SHOULD sign one at this point.

 

But there is a question to be asked.

 

Caldwell said his goal this offseason is to improve the top 1/3 of the roster.

 

Assuming the team signs Thurmond and/or Young, would you say at this early stage, he has achieved that goal yet?

 

If not, would additional free agent signings do the trick, or would we have to wait until after the draft to be able to definitively state he's improved the top 1/3 of the roster?

 

 

 

The "top 1/3 of the roster" would equate to starters.  I think Bryant, Gerhart, and Beadles would be starters.  Not stars, but definitely starters.

I think we have to wait until the draft.   I don't think it's cost-effective to try to sign true difference makers in free agency.   If I were running the team, I would use free agency to fill holes on the roster with middle of the road, cost-effective players, which would free up my draft to go after best available player types who can often turn out to be star players.   In other words, I would get my star players through the draft.  

Which is exactly what this front office is doing, and you're whining about it in every other thread.  None of the deals they've given out so far are blockbusters.  Beadles contract isn't even among the top 10 for guards in the league right now.  He's being well paid, but his contract isn't out of line with what would be expected.

I agree, this is exactly what the front office is doing.   I don't know how you have misread what I have been saying.    I never complained about Beadles' contract, or anyone else's.

I think you can make the argument he has upgraded the top 3rd to a limited degree.

 

Beadles is a definite upgrade to Rackley, and a better scheme fit to boot.

I'm of a mixed opinion on this topic.

 

On the one hand, it is good that finally we are active in free agency again.

 

I got sick of the Ketchmanite mantra of "No bargains the first week of free agency" every year, as other teams got good players.

 

I think the team had some decent signings thus far.  Bryant and Beadles upgrades LDE and LG, respectively.

 

Gerhart intrigues me and, if he gets the C and G, could be a very productive RB.  Almost like this generation's Keenan McCardell signing.

 

I am not AGAINST these signings so far, and I would applaud a Thurmond signing.

 

Furthermore, we need role players.  Not every free agent signing can be a top dollar, premiere guy.

 

But are these guys difference makers?  Are they catalysts?  Do any of these guys give us matchup advantages the way a shut down corner like Talib would?

 

I think these signings represent progress, but no one of these guys, at face value, appears to put the Jaguars "over the top."

 

I believe he is of the mind set to find those elite players in the draft.

Nutshell:

 

We all like Bradley's personality. The players do seem to like playing for him, no doubt. The fans love his enthusiasm. That said, I don't think Bradley being here has made an impact on significant roster improvement. Beadles came here because we overpaid him. Perhaps the Seattle influx can be more so credited to Bradley, but thats not uncommon or unprecedented to have former players follow a coach. 

 

I see FBT's assertion as incomplete. 

 

Red Bryant signing was almost entirely due to Bradley.

With the FA availability, these were decent additions. Questions? Sure. Is Toby an every down back? Or will he supplement ? I'm sure Defenses aren't quivering with Henne under center and Toby in the back field with Shorts lined up outside.

But to complain and second guess the signings is pre mature at best.

Last year I was disappointed. Being an original ticket holder, the Miami playoff game was a distant memory and patience was wearing thin. Pissed may even describe my feelings better when London was announced.

But, I am on the get on the bus with Gus. Not just his enthusiasm. Rah rah goes so far. It's how the team played in the second half with nothing to play for.

Mediocre players thrive and play better in this environment. Heart. A coach can instill heart with attitude and getting those type players. Which team had more heart in the Super Bowl? both had talent.

Color me a tad more optimistic.

Most of the doubters, Henne haters, signing haters are not in the stands on Sunday anyway.
