McShay 2014 NFL Mock Draft 1.0

#41

Quote:I'm not concerned about his height, just pointing out that he's not 6'1.

I think he needs to stay at TAMU before he'd be ready for the NFL though. His footwork is inconsistent, which leads to inconsistent accuracy & zip on passes. Too often he'll leave a clean pocket with little to no pressure to scramble around, I've never seen Manziel disguise his intent with his eyes or even go through more than 2 reads before scrambling.

An announcer/analyst on TV showed a play as an example of how he moves the safety with his eyes. I'm no expert on quarterbacking but Brees and Aikmen both have said that they believe he'll be a good quarterback in the pros. Pretty good endorsement. But who has a crystal ball. He could be a bust......or he could be one of the best in the NFL. He won't be running much in the NFL. He won't have too. He will, however, be as slippery as an eel.

Wait until he's facing full NFL level competition.

I was wrong about Trent Baalke.

That applies to every quarterback in the draft.

True, but he is in the SEC. Its not anywhere near the same, but its closer than the other college conferences.

I'd argue the SEC is closer to other college conferences than it is to the NFL's level of competition.

Michael Jordan sucks at evaluating talent. I don't care what Brees or Aikman have to say about manziel. I highly doubt either have really studied him.

Well......I won't be asking Michael Jordan to evaluate our potential quarterbacks then.

No, Jace Amaro or Beasley in the first? I'd be thrilled to get either in the second round.

The point he's making is what I agree with, why should we care what Bree's and aikmen think? Neither have ever made a career of evaluating talent and neither have drafted a qb.

Yes they both are/we're great quarterbacks but it means nothing in how they evaluate talent.

Yeah, how many former greats are now evaluators?  GM's in the league?  Sure, some of the GM's played in the league.  Some of them might have been great even.  But most former greats become commentators.  Troy Aikmen of course proves that skill in the game does not equate to skill in commentating on said game.

Yes....I have the feeling some real bargains will be there at the top of the 2nd. Hope we have an early pick in the 2nd.

@Dockerill91 & 11th Doctor:

Yeah....I get it. The only ones that study these guys in depth are the NFL scouts. But they aren't talking. We don't know what they are thinking. And many of those will miss on numerous bargains. I believe Caldwell will pick us some good ones. If he picks Manziel or anyone else....I'm fine with it. So many people on this board denigrates anyone who thinks the kid has potential. I have been checking the mock drafts daily.....and I'm seeing Manziel consistently in the top ten now. So apparently, there are many others that think the guy has potential.

I will admit, I don't want to touch Manziel anywhere before the 3rd round, but if Caldwell does indeed draft him early, I'll only have to trust him. For one because we have no choice but to trust him, but for two because it's his job if he gets it wrong.

Agreed...I bet his stock drops at the combine.

So Manziel, Amaro, Blackmon, Shorts, Sanders? I could definitely get behind that.

I understand the point you're making, but just to name one - Ozzie Newsome.

This is exactly how I feel. I don't rate him highly, but if Caldwell does..well I have faith in his decision.

I was thinking it might be closer to 5'9.

Theres absolutely no way I can see us passing on Clowney if he falls to us unless Bridgewater is somehow still there aswell.

We can then see who is around in the second, or pick up Cutler or even Vick later on
