Amazon Delivery Drones

Quote:I hear you on people and complaining while doing the opposite. In today's modern age it's impossible to remain anonymous anyways, just a way of life.

I don't see it putting drivers out of work, it's only items under 5lbs and within 10 miles of the distribution centers. Maybe one day they'd carry larger items a further distance but that's a long way off. heck who knows maybe one day they'll just beam stuff like in star trek

Indeed. I try to keep myself relatively anonymous online, but I'm not expecting complete anonymity. If you want privacy, you should not be on the Internet. Chances are, almost every website you visit is tracking you in some way, but I doubt people want to give up what they do on the Internet in the name of privacy. They want total anonymity while enjoying the luxuries of modern life. It's simply not going to happen.

Last time I had delivery the driver was not only late, but he had the wrong order.

Neither would be eliminated completely by drones, but they'd certainly be a lot less common and you don't have to tip drones!

I'd hold the drone hostage until I got my pizza! They get mad when I try it with people

Quote:I was referring to the UPS & FedEx drivers, not the pizza delivery guy

Maybe they should start getting their drone piloting lessons.  There's going to be a huge market for it.  Those things don't fly themselves.  Need to stop looking at lost opportunities and looking at new ones.

Not a big fan of pizza from the chain companies that tout or used to (30 min or less delivery) anyway....their pizza usually tastes like cardboard.

Gimme a pizza from a local mom & pop pizza joint anyday over Domino's/ Papa Johns.

The Domino's up here seem to be just as expensive (especially if you have it delivered, which is usually the case - they add $2.00 delivery charge), if not more so than the local pizzeria type places and the quality is usually nowhere near as good.

However, I do like Domino's hot wings.

More or less joking about dominos I just like to play into the redneck stereotypes. I love pizzas of all kind even that damn Yankee pizza!

<div>This has been in the works for 61 years, Kids. It all started by passing notes in class without letting the teacher catch you, and now we continue to evolve to "Drones" ... My Dad said it started with the Pony Express.

Delivery systems in the future? "Beam me up, Scotty, directly to The Bridge"  ...  Really?

Why did they have a Transporter Room, when they could beam you to, and from anywhere? Beam me into the Lady Starshippers Locker Room, Scotty? Banana

Quote:Yeah, but those jobs in those fulfillment centers are likely to be significantly less salary than the drivers.

Overall, a loss for the worker.

Milton Friedman went to China, and the authorities took him on a tour to a construction site.   There were thousands of workers using shovels.   When he asked why they didn't use heavy equipment to move earth, he was told, "We can employ more workers if we just use shovels."   He replied, "Why not use teaspoons?"

I am excited about the new markets this will open up. Yes this could put personal deliveries out, but such is the life in the free market.

I was also a bit skeptical about increasing minimum wage like the president wants to do, but the more I think about it, the more I am ok with it. It will force businesses to seek ways to cut costs through automation. This means a lot more work for engineers, developers, and the like. The only thing I am concerned about is that while this will bring up the quality of jobs, the lowest-common-denominators who are only capable of menial tasks like food service or delivery are now stuck in a weird, parasitic position. This will likely result in an even greater income inequality and welfare state, but it almost seems required as technology progresses. You cannot hold back the future and technological growth because individuals refuse (or cannot) contribute to socitety. You basically have to sit them on welfare, forget about them, and move on.

I think if you raise minimum wage up to where I've been hearing, you will find pretty much every ones prices going up to adjust for it. Leaving it to be how things are now just with higher prices, those minimum wage workers will still be in trouble trying to afford a place to live and what not. May even send more small businesses closing their doors.
