Please don't compare Dave Caldwell to Gene Smith.  In just 6 months the differences are vast.

 

Caldwell - likes speed and playmakers

Caldwell - drafts from big conferences

Caldwell - identified existing talent sucked or were not worthy of long term contracts.

 

Gene - liked to be different - small schoool needle in the haystack dude.

Gene - gave contract extensions based on your talent compared to teammates (e.g. If Mike Thomas is the best player on our team, we should lock him up).

Gene - prioritized combine & workout results vs on the field results.

 

not sure if serious....but above seems reasonable. 

 

However, its all about results. Method of reaching those results don't matter as much if the ultimate outcome same. 

 

Also as bad as Gene was - you actually have to give him the nod on trades.....he was able to get a 5th for Mike Thomas - who was not only overpaid and still sucked but was also a player that didn't play a premium position and also was originally drfated in the 4th round. Caldwell could only get a 4th + a 5th for a player that played premium position, was drafted in the top 10, and by most accounts was seen as a pretty good player around the league.

Gene also made a nice deal in trading up to get Blackmon. (stud player) and only had to give up a 4th rounder to do so.

Monroe - STL botched their Tackle pick which allowed Eugene to fall. Jason Smith yeah.
Blackmon - STL screwed up thinking we would go small school and leave them with a pick haul and JB.

Seems like all of you are forgetting about Gene trading a future 2nd for Derek Cox, a 2nd which would have been used on Sean Lee. Its been well documented that he was desperately trying to trade up into the 2nd to land him, but couldnt because he wasted that pick.

 

Using a 3rd and 2nd for Cox really hurt this franchise.

 When you can name the good draft picks and the free agents in this short of a list from his tenure there is a problem.  My hardest decision is who was worse Shack Harris or GS? It is a low bar, but Caldwell should easily be able to out do his two predecessors.

i agree.... blackmon and shorts.... thats pretty much the list.... when u have 28 draft picks and 4 fa periods and only 2 player you get are worth a damn, thats a huge problem.

We have to be one of the worse teams when it comes to Defensive End play.  I have no dislike of the guy but it is hard to believe that Paul Spicer and his outstanding effort guy work is one of the better ends we have had in years.  Sure makes me miss Clyde Simmons and Tony Brackens.

You're just now realizing that after we have been in dead last in sacks the past 5 years?

Reggie Heyward was good for a few years for us until he started getting injured.

What's funny is during that draft we kept hearing about how he loved Sean Lee. Imagine if he had taken him at 10 instead of Alualu. Would look like a genius move now.

Interesting thought, but I doubt this team would be much if any better off with Lee. People would likely be still complaining that we didn't draft Earl Thomas or over rated JPP.
