I actually think the Jags do throw to TEs but they haven't had a playmaking one since.... Well maybe ever? Lewis and Kyle Brady were both better blockers than receivers. Julius was fat and slow. ASJ got hurt.

Pete Mitchell was thier 1st and best blocker/reciever, and thats going back to the expansion days.  Bring back Damon 'Big Sofa' Jones!

What does it matter? The Jags don't throw to the TE anyways. Anyone making league minimum can be as successful as a high paid TE in this offense.

Until the offense changes, TE just needs to block and run routes where they never get the ball

Should never have let Lewis go in the first place. It's going to be a boring draft for us.. probably at least 2 offensive linemen and a tight end, have to completely revamp the offense.

QB/OT/TE in any order in rounds 1-3 would be nice. Try and find a solid guard and maybe another TE in the back half of the draft. Need a solid run stuffer up front too, Dareus aint cheap and we are running out of cap space, but I digress.

ASJ has some flashes, I can see why a team would bring him in, but he just hasn't consistently produced the numbers you need to be a threat at TE, and he can't stay healthy. I'd love to see us bring in 2 rookie TE and possibly a cheap vet, we have absolutely nobody at TE when ASJ gets cut.

Am I just completely misremembering Marcedes Lewis out of college being known more as a receiver than a blocker?  I could swear that he spent a bunch of time developing his blocking when he first got here, because it was such a deficiency.

You're correct.. the two top TEs in that draft were Vernon Davis and Marcedes Lewis and Lewis was considered a slam dunk receiving prospect but didn't do much blocking.

And if I remember correctly, Leonard Pope was considered a better prospect than Davis until the combine when Vernon Davis blew everyone away.

Just pulled up the all time Jags receiving stats to see where Pete Mitchell fell.  I always thought he was an underrated player and the best receiving TE we've had.  But just not enough balls to go around when you are competing with Jimmy and Keenan for receptions.  Looks like he is 3rd in yards behind Marcedes and Kyle Brady.

btw still hard to believe Matt Jones is 7th all time in receiving TDs for us.  Just think how good he could have been had he laid off the coke and put in just an ounce of effort.  what a waste!

Thanks for clarifying.  I think my point was that this always pops in the back of my mind when someone says we never had a pass-catching TE, maybe it was just we didn't have an offense that used the TE that way, or a QB worth a darn throwing it to them.

One was drafted in 2007 and played for the raiders and Seahawks. The other - the Jags drafted in 2009.

He had that dirty word (potential) used about him for too long. 

When is he supposed to finally break out? It's been pretty long. 

But with all their holes, I think taking a TE in the 2nd is a bit early, unless he is a real beast.
