Blake with a running game, played solid

Quote:Bortles bread and butter pass are those intermediate routes and they seemed to have taken them away. If the defense has adjusted there has to be a way to adjust on offense as well and work them back into the game plan.

I think that's when it's absolutely critical to be able to run the ball to draw more defenders closer to the line of scrimmage.

They were running the ball effectively but stuck to calling shorter routes.

Yup,, and I think that was a very smart plan.

First 3 games:

BB 6 INTs ( Jags go 0-3)

Today with a short throw plan:

BB ZERO INTs (Jags win)

Amazing.

Exactly.  QBs like Tom Brady are Checkdown Charlies who rely on timing and YAC.  Bortles played smart today, didn't get out of his comfort zone, and didn't take a bunch of risks.  The running game, defense, and special teams all played a part.  The big thing is, the offense didn't LOSE the game.

Do you think we have an honest chance against the bye week this season?

I think the game will be over before the half, we suck against the bye.

True.

The critical question here is were our receivers running open on deeper throws? If they were regularly all game and Blake wasn't taking the shots then that might be an issue. Otherwise, I personally don't think there's anything to worry about just yet.

Quote:They put the kid gloves on with Blake today and I'll be honest with you and tell you that I really don't like seeing that. You don't baby a franchise QB in his third year. Maybe he really isn't the guy...

There was a few 1 read roll outs today for sure. He had a few bad throws and the fumbled/bobbled screen throw and there was one play where I thought they were gonna get there when he was holding it low. Other then that he played okay.

No Fun

The staff knew, despite what the team tried to project, that Blake's confidence was basically in the toilet. The game plan today was clearly to begin re-establishing it.

The key stats here...2 TDs passing, 1 rushing and NO turnovers (which I predicted in the score thread...lol). His performance was far from perfect but it's actually a good foundation for him to build on moving forward.

Yeah he can build on this game for sure improve during the bye and be ready to play like last year.

He played okay against an atrocious defense guys. This wouldn't have been successful against anyone else...ok maybe the Browns.

Anything he threw that was farther than like 5 yards was still inaccurate and ill timed, not to mention the mechanics were as bad as ever.

As stated just above, if this is a first small step toward incremental improvement all year then that's fine...but he was still pretty bad.

What I really liked to see was Bortles picking up yard on the ground himself (without taking hits). Obviously we want him looking to throw it downfield, but if it's there, take it. Doing that will also help to neutralize pass rush as well.

He wasn't bad at all.

I think it was probably something the coaching staff pointed out about the defense. Defenses have been trying to cover the over the top stuff heavily so once the pass rush leaves a lane open if all the defenders are back trying to cover Arob and Hurns it should leave massive spaces open underneath, and in the first half it definitely did. I wouldn't count on that being continually open going forward. At some point Bortles is going to have to get back to throwing down the field successfully.

His throwing motion is an issue

Quote:There was a throw that he severely underthrew to A Rob that worried me. If it had been where it needed to be it was a TD.
And Arob dropped a TD pass on his numbers.

People on this board don't watch games besides Jaguar games.
