The run nobody is really talking about

#41

When even the great JIM BROWN said Fred Taylor is one of the best he has ever seen:

"Marcus Allen and I used to talk about a running back that no one else used to talk about out of Jacksonville, Fred Taylor. And Fred is cold-blooded and nobody generally talks about this guy. You can't catch him. He's got all the natural moves. He just got hurt a lot. So those of us who had the keen eye knew that Fred was one of the greatest running backs that I've seen in a long time...".

Fred missed 24 games from 99-01. If he would averaged the 76 YPG he amassed over the course of his career, he would've had just over 13,500 career yards. Good for 8th all time. That would've put him solidly in HOF consideration. As it stands now, everyone ahead of him that is eligible is in the hall of fame. The only 2 NOT are Frank Gore and Adrian Peterson.

Emmitt had great vision and a stellar O-Line, but Fred had all world talent and could either cut on a dime or flat out run you over (see: Mike Doss). James Robinson is getting there...but he isn't there yet. He doesn't have the 5th gear Fred had, but he does not go down easy.

I agree with the guys saying he needs more carries. Dude is averaging 5 and a half a pop. He has very active feet when he runs much like Emmitt and Frank Gore. He should be top 3 in rushing yards with about 3 or 4 more TDs but I’m not sure what Ol Bevell is doing with the play calling.

We got an absolute work horse. He needs about 20-25 carries per game.

I’m also imagining what he would look like behind a good offensive line. The coaches and owner better not mess this thing up with Robinson. I hope the kid doesn’t start complaining about his work load and start requesting a trade and all that nonsense.

ETN would NOT be on the bench. Dude is electric. Well, was...

Fred missed 55 games. If he only missed 5 like Emmitt Smith, he would have finished around 16000 yards good for top 3 all time.

If you use the same metrics (76 yards a game avg), he'd have 15,875 yards. Good for #4 all time. He'd have been # at the time of his retirement. Definitely one of the "What might've been" stories. Him and Shannon Sharpe both.

So who is on the bench in favor of ETN?
JRob??
He gonna start outside at WR instead of Viska or Agnew, even though he isn't a WR?
He gonna run 2 back sets all the time?

He was electric in college no guarantees he would have even been good at the NFL.
Now he's gotten a Lisfranc injury, which I'm guessing will not be good for his game, especially next season.
It's often a career changing or ending injury.

Trent Richardson was electric in College.

Leonard Fournette was electric in College.

Lots of crappy RBs were electric in College.

JRob is close to being Elite. ETN just doesn't have the ability to do what JRob does.

You guys sure are confident of someone's lack of skills that you've never seen play at this level.

I agree the injury is significant and hope it doesn't derail his career but, to declare him terrible from the outset is laughable.

No more confident than you are of his skills at this level you've also never seen play?

No one said, or at least I didn't, he's terrible.
He's probably a good RB. Maybe even great.

Terrible pick at 25 for a team definitely not needing another RB.
It isn't about ETN, it's about Meyer and Baalke man.

25th pick is probably perfect for a team that needed ETN to get over the hump, ie the Rams. Taking ETN for a team like ours who need a better player at 15 positions other than RB? Foolish.

A team like this that needs speed and playmaker game breaker ability taking a shot a etienne is not a bad roll of the dice. It does suck he got hurt. Bad jags luck

my original comment said nothing about his skills. It was a criticism of our boneheaded leadership that apparently believes freshmen rookies do their best development on the sidelines.

What sucks is Frank Gore will get a gold jacket before Fred. And Fred is way more talented, gifted, faster, better, etc than Gore.

Gore never rushed for more than 1214 yards in a season. Taylor rushed for that many yards in his rookie year and only started 12 games.

Just wish they would give Taylor, Boselli and Smith their due.

"Rolling the dice" on a 1st round luxury pick is, try as you might, indefensible.

Honestly just don't see anything special about him.

The ACC has no defense.

The SEC had great defenses... Trent Richardson and Leonard Fournette ran straight through them.... (well, Leonard sucked versus Alabama)...

You just really can't tell from College to Pros who is going to do well.... but... looking at JRob's highlights... he was doing things neither Trent nor Leonard could do. Makes you wonder why scouts get paid at all.

Just saying... I see nothing special about Etienne. He had the benefit of the best college QB of the decade to keep defenses honest.

By this logic, James Robinson shouldn't be good because he played at Illinois State against bad defenses.

You have to admit he’s an exception. Most good NFL players come from tougher conferences.

Sure.

But saying Etienne isn't good because he went to a school in the ACC doesn't really make sense.

I said in highlights you could see he was special. The speed that he hits the hole - might be the fastest in the NFL. But he also has the patience to cut it back when he needs to. That combination is rare and something I never saw in anything Etienne did.

Like I said, not sure why scouts get paid if they can't recognize these things.

I was curious to see if the moves JRob was making in College was because his competition was inferior or if he was special.. turns out he's special.
