Training Camp Countdown & Who to Watch

Btw Parrker washingtons voice man o man lol.

The WR battle in camp+ will be an interesting one to watch. Not so much at the top, but who will round out the back end. There's currently 12 WRs on the roster (Agnew included). I think we all believe Ridley, Kirk and Zay are locks.

I think Agnew brings enough on Special Teams especially, but also as a gimmick option on Offense. Year 2 in the scheme, can't help but feel that they'll have even more new plays drawn up specifically for him on Offense. That leaves either one, or two spots up for grabs.

Does Washington push Tim Jones off the 53 man if they only keep 5? Do they roll with 6 and keep both Washington and Tim Jones? Does Kevin Austin start to come into his own and let his talent/ability shine through? Or maybe they want to add a tall WR into the mix? Elijah Cooks and Jacob Harris are both 6'4 and 6'5 WRs.

You couldn't fill a thimble with my knowledge of Strange or his game; I know how EE played and was very pivotal in a number of games/drives being successful. I certainly want Strange to be the long-term equivalent if the team is not planning to keep Engram around. Does anyone else here get the feeling that unless Strange essentially becomes a carbon copy of EE, we're going to deem him a flop?

I really hope we see some flashes from our newest TE this preseason. Hopefully the backup QBs give him some decent passes to work with Wink

I think they see Strange as a chess piece to be used in conjunction with Engram or whomever might replace Engram as the primary "move-TE"  should he not sign a long term deal.

Two tight end sets in 2022 did not offer the Jags offense with any additional influence on opposing coverage.
If Engram was in - defenses fully expected a route to be run.
If Manhertz (or basically any other TE) was in - defenses expected him to block.

Strange will ideally allow the offense to field a two-TE set that requires defenses to consider both players as receiving threats while simultaneously giving our personnel an additional capable run blocker should they call a play requiring one.

Having another big body that can do more than block 95% of the time and leak out for a screen the other 5% should provide another facet of strategy.

Speaking of Strange's blocking prowess:

That's a different camera angle of the first Golic tweet/clip I posted, but 100% glorious and worth watching nonetheless!

I hope this dude turns out to be the dual-purpose threat they envisioned when they drafted him.
Could open some things up for an already potent offense.

Oh you're right it is, still nice to see both angles of it. The literal definition of pancaking somebody. Dude put him on skates, slammed him and made it look easy.

About two weeks until we are back in business. Can’t wait. Preseason game 1 is almost here. I’m looking forward to seeing the defense hopefully progress.

I think Parker Washington is a lock too but that’s just a hunch.

The WR battle is going to be awesome.

Parker Washington vs Jamal Agnew is going to be a good battle. I think Agnew wins it but still gonna be fun to watch.

20 days away from this post.

What are the things you hope to see or learn from these weeks of more intense practice and player evaluation?

  • Plenty of depth storylines to watch
  • A number of players coming back from injury to evaluate
  • A few starting or rotational roles still to be determined as well

Share your expectations, hopes, and questions in this dead zone thread.

I'll be most interested in:
  1. Nickel Competition
  2. LG shake out / Bartch health and performance
  3. Harrison progress reports
  4. Bigsby looking the part to spell ETN and/or perform in short yrdg situations
  5. Ridley being Ridley
  6. ILB personnel usage
  7. Strange looking like a viable and versatile option + Do they line him up creatively? Does he acclimate?
  8. Statements from Cam Robinson - does he finally humble himself after a not-so-great year being highly paid and a suspension? Or will he stick to his "not playing guard" song and dance?
  9. Does Fortner look stronger when the pads come on?
  10. Mike Caldwell - Would like to hear from him by the end of camp regarding this defense and its identity - I know it's evolving and he's learning on the fly - but it would be good to enter September knowing there's a focus based on how he's evaluated the talent and how he'll use them

#8 is off base in my opinion. Cam has proven that he's an viable LT even though we drafted an viable LT that'll play RT until otherwise.

As of #10, Caldwell led an stellar D (once they got it together) In His First Year as an DC into the playoffs to which our team has added tremendous depth and experience to many of the positions. I truly expect the same or more from our last year's ranked D.

Time Will Tell.

I think Caldwell did very good as the Defensive Coordinator. He was willing to move guys around like Williams and Allen in order to get those most out of that defensive unit.

It wasn’t like Caldwell had a 15 sack guy to make the defense look good. Our starting OLBs barely got 10 sacks between the 2 of them. We still managed to win the division and a playoff game.

This is a fair take, but an argument could def be made that he waited too long to figure out how to play Williams in the secondary, neglected to find a better option than Herndon there, and could have manufactured more results from our pass rush with some combination of:
  • fixing the coverage issues sooner
  • dialing up more aggressive blitz schemes
  • moving his DL/OLB pieces around sooner and more frequently to find the best result

Personally, I'm mostly good with the somewhat delayed timeline of these things since he was a first year coordinator.   I'll be eager to see what year two in his system reveals for the development of the Walker, Lloyd, Cisco, Muma  - and whether they find a way to help Allen's pressures to turn into sacks.

For some reason the defense is not really bothering me going into the season. I do believe they need someone in the middle hold the line or god forbid be a threat to push the pocket some. This is in my opinion what has been hampering our pass rush. The lack of this allows other o-lines to scheme moreon the edges.

The offensive line "jelling" and being able to play together early in the season is my main concern.

These guys by default have a spot on the 53 ... Cam Robinson, Brandon Scherff, Tyler Shatley, Ben Bartch, Anton Harrison, Walker Little, Luke Fortner
That is 7 spots. We need at least 3 of these to step up. Any of these can change their future and ours by doing this.

Chandler Brewer
Josh Wells
Blake Hance
Cole Van Lanen (limited play last year and maybe a good thing cause I remember some less than stellar stuff)
Coy Cronk
Cooper Hodges (rookie that may get a pass)
Samuel Jackson
Darryl Williams

ps I think we all under value Cam's value to us. He was our best overall lineman before he was injured. (pass AND run)

WR -appears to be a REALLY good group.

These guys have spots on the 53 ... Christian Kirk, Calvin Ridley, Jamal Agnew, Zay Jones
These guys are fighting over 2 spots on the 53. ... Jacob Harris, Tim Jones, Kendric Pryor, Parker Washington, Elijah Cooks, Jaray Jenkins, Oliver Martin, Kevin Austin, Seth Williams
This should be quite the competition....

I am thinking those that have a year in the system are going to have to show real development or we will give some new faces a swing at the plate. This is across all positions.
A new broom always sweeps clean.

I’m going to check the stats in a few days but I loved how often Caldwell dialed up blitzes from our secondary guys. I’m willing to bet brought more corners and safeties more than any other team in the league. Campbell, Jenkins, Cisco, Wingard, etc it seemed like we blitzed alot of secondary guys.

That’s a good thing but a bad thing. The good thing is it worked most of the season, the bad is it means our defensive front is not getting home and we’re having to fabricate pressure. But I thought Caldwell did a great job with his timing of when he dialed it up.

If Walker can double his output and Allen can get to 12-15, man…

No

You were panned by several posters for whining about the 2.6 million one year deal for a back up DB

I initially called you out for claiming Herndon lost the Jags 3 games by giving up "deep" passes.
He played in nine games that only included two losses and one of them was quite clearly not on him or his giving up "deep" passes.

I have literally been calling out Tre Herndon's bad play in coverage since 2018. Anyone who has been here long enough will attest to not only that but that I've clamored for a proper nickel to be added this entire offseason.

You can go read the pages of nonsense here since you don't remember it clearly

You were crying about Herndon being re-signed for like $2m in FA (4 months ago). Which is why NYC and plenty of us railed on you about it because you were getting upset over chump $$ (as NFL money goes).

We all agree Herndon can be upgraded, but he provides experience and depth at the very least. He's only on a 1 year deal. It's not the end of the world and you definitely don't dump somebody until you have a replacement and we didn't have a replacement at the time. Maybe we'll have one come mid-season or so, when the rooks get some time/experience, but that's a wait and hope and see situation.
