7th Round Pick Woodward out for season

#41

So sick of you jokers blaming the strength coaches.  These guys JUST GOT HERE.  We literally just drafted them.  What exactly should our strength coaches have done, known who we were going to draft and start a conditioning program months ago?  Seriously guys, it would hurt to just think for a second.

Quote:Allen Robinson was a 2nd round pick, are you really comparing a journeyman 7th rounder to a top 5 receiver in the league? Really? Last I checked, 2nd rounders were highly rated prospects.

Do i really have to list late rounders who have made a impact in the nfl?? Come on mann..

Quote:And you know he wouldn't have made the roster how again? If Branch can make a roster im sure a hungry 7th rounder could too.
At best, he was a project that would require developing, and ultimately that would land him on the practice squad.

Branch had a significantly higher draft pedigree, and regardless of how that translated to the NFL, the fact remains, he was a guy that had significantly higher expectations coming into the league.

He'll get a year to learn the system and to rehab the injury.  At the end of the day, the only thing he'll miss out on for now is practice reps.  As long as he recovers quickly, that will be taken care of next year.

Quote:You took the words out of my mouth. The guy just about guaranteed himself a spot on the team this year where he probably would have been cut. Let the guy do the "Dante Fowler" and see what he has next year. Being an Achilles doesn't bode well for his prognosis in pro football though.

Exactly. I was just thinking how he'll have nearly as much time as Fowler had to heal up, which in football terms is as long as it ever gets. An Achilles injury can be one of the most devastating injuries as its possibly career ending, however, sports medicine keeps making huge strides. He'll have world class care helping him to return.

Watching tape of Woodard as a player, I saw a guy with an array of pass rushing moves able to rush practically from anywhere along the DL, however, as far as getting on the field in games he's very raw and developmental. There's nothing good about the injury, however, there's much to be said for him being allowed time to develop. He just made this roster as a member of the IR, and he has a very realistic chance of making the Jaguars 2017 roster.

That said, Bjoern Werner's chances of making this year's roster just improved.

Quote:He wouldn't have made the roster, but it does suck to lose another player to a season ending injury in pre-training camp. Isn't Woodard a bigger guy that can develop into Odrick's back up? This helps Alualu.

He was a bigger guy at 6-6, 270 with the potential to play Alualu's role, however, I still think Alualu is goners.

Quote:Pretty sure he's citing how A-Rob (pick 61) has outplayed the Albino Tiger (pick 39). Though I could definitely be giving him too much credit Ninja

Yeah i was referring to Branch talent wise making the team, but yeah i agree with you.

Woodard was likely bound for the practice squad, as a developmental strong end.  His absence won't hurt the team this year.  However, I wish him well in his recovery, and look forward to seeing him on the practice field next season.

YoBoy, this is football, injuries happen to every team.  How do we know if they are getting proper workouts to warmup?  Do you really concern yourself with this? I'll save you some anxiety, yes they warmup properly.  No, that's not why he tore his Achilles.

Where has football gone when 270 is "big" for a defensive end?

This is the NFL Yo Boy, not Pop Warner.  They have professionals.  You should find something else to worry about than them warming up, haha.

Quote:That depth chart isnt accurate... Like i said you never know still, what could have happen... So many instances where lower draft picks out perform higher draft pick... Allen Robinson for example..
You are reaching really hard right now. Woodward was a 7th round draft pick. Our 6th round draft pick this year is going to have a hard time making the team. Our 7th round picks last year did not make the team. Woodward had an uphill battle to climb to make the roster. Forget the depth chart, its a numbers game, and quite frankly, Woodward, baring a miraculous camp or freak circumstance was not making the team. Dante, Ngakoue, Davis, Werner, Holmes are all pass rushers as well and will compete for playing time or roster spots. Woodward had his hands full, theres only so many players that can make the 53, remember, LEO is not the only position on the D Line. Woodward was most likely on the practice squad this season.

There will always be players who outperform their draft position. You cant compare that to a current 7th round pick till he hits the field. Most likely, going by a numbers game, and theres a reason he went in the 7th, his chances of even making the 53 man roster were very slim.

You realize Andre Branch, as you gladly stated, was a 2nd round draft pick. He was not getting cut anytime soon. 7th rounder, different situation. Branch played out his rookie deal, was decent but never lived up to his draft slot. Andre Branch is not comparable to Woodward, 1. We have never seen Woodward and 2. And its tough to say this, Andre Branch is atleast decent depth in the NFL. He did not have to wait long to get a call from a team. Your comparing things that are not comparable to the situation. Woodward was a journeyman who almost went undrafted, he got injured, hes out, he had an uphill battle to make the roster.

Why is this difficult to comprehend? Just look at who is in front of him at the position he is competing for.

Quote:Lets be realistic, he was not making the team, also, it was an ACL. I know everyone is freaking out because Ramsey, but Ramsey may miss a month or two. Woodward was a 7th round pick and had an uphill battle to make the team. If anything, we can stash him on the injured reserve and see what he can do next year. We have a lot of bodies at the pass rush position now.

Everyone chill out. However, stinks for Woodward, hope he has a successful recovery.
Doesn't he and the team that spent untold hours scouting him deserve to be able to let that play out first before you say he was just a 7th round pick?

A hypothetical 6th round pick doesn't stand much more of a chance to make a relatively talented roster than a 7th round pick.  But that doesn't mean, absent a significant injury, he can't have a significant career.  Tom Brady worked out pretty well.  Richard Dent wound up in the Hall of Fame, and he was an 8th rounder.

Considering we have not a single proven player at LEO, the team has seriously pursued two free agents to fill that role, and spent no fewer than 4 draft choices at the position the last two drafts, I don't think we can dismiss the possibility of anybody making the roster at this position.

Worst to 1st.  Curse Reversed!

Branch was a second round pick. He was going to get every opportunity to prove himself. It didn't happen in anything but flashes. Woodard was, and continues to be a project. The injury changed nothing.

I tore my Achilles in October. I'm just now beginning to work on gaining strength back in it.

My hopes are with this young man. If he's dedicated, he can get back to 91% to 99%. I'm pulling for him to make the squad next year!!!

Yeah this is true... But my point is he still had a chance to make the team.. Others saying he didnt.
