An Embarrassment of Riches

Quote: With the personnel the Jaguars have at this time, how can 11 wins not be a realistic possibility? The pieces the team added this off-season, coupled with Dante Fowler's return provides a scenario that 11 wins is something shouldn't surprise anyone if it happens. Of course, it might not happen or even be close to that tangible level. But when looking at the talent on the Jaguars roster, why can't they win 11 games if key injuries aren't a major theme and youth isn't an overwhelming negative factor? At the very least, the Jaguars are now closer to 11-5 than they are to 5-11.Fowler, Jack, Ngakoue, Ramsey, Day, etc. are all rookies. Let's realize that the likelyhood of them being complete difference makers week in and week out is unlikely. They are upgrades and we'll be much better because of it, but we aren't going to have some top 10 defense. I like our FA additions, we got some ideal fits for rookies who are very talented and I definitely expect an improvement in the win column, but they are going to have their growing pains. All our edge rushers are going to be rookies, which is generally a position that takes time to get going. Guy I always reference is Khalil Mack who had 4.5 his rookie year and looks at how big of a beast he is. We show less advertisements to registered users. Accounts are free; join today! Quote:Just the time it takes to gel. That's what might keep them from 11 wins. They'll be better in 2017 than in 2016. Agreed. A key word you mentioned is ' might' . Sometimes the transition of talented players is noticeably longer than what fans of a team hope for. Sometimes it isn't. Because the Jaguars have many highly talented young players on Defense, there should be times when athletic skill wins out over inexperience. There should be times when the opposite occurs. Ultimately, the Jaguars season will be determined largely by the team's injury situation and what % of the time talent prevails over inexperience. Quote:Fowler, Jack, Ngakoue, Ramsey, Day, etc. are all rookies. They don't have to be difference makers right away for this team to win 10-11 games though. I think Fowler is being underestimated and understandably so due to the injury. He's going to be a monster. Just wait. Quote:Fowler, Jack, Ngakoue, Ramsey, Day, etc. are all rookies. Everything you mentioned makes sense. There will very likely be some growing pains. What helps the Jaguars though is the team's Offense is further along and the team added some key VETERAN Defensive players that should help make the youth transition at least somewhat easier, relatively speaking. When considering everything though, it's fair to say that 11 wins would be on the high side of what should be expected to happen for the Jaguars in 2016. But I truly believe it's a realistic number. A 9 win season would represent major tangible progress. But if they go 9-7, you probably will have the feeling this team was close to 11-5. If the Jaguars only win 8 games, a Head Coaching change is something that ownership and Dave Caldwell might believe is necessary, based on the team's talent. Quote:We're going to have some really good training camp battles between the offense and the defense. A good offense doesn't get any better by training against a crappy defense. It might make them feel good, but then they get in a game against a real defense and reality strikes. It'll be interesting to see Jalen Ramsey and Allen Robinson go head to head. Or Myles Jack matched up on Julius Thomas. Or Luke Joeckel or Kelvin Beachum blocking against Dante Fowler. It'll be interesting to see Blake trying to look off Tashaun Gipson. Or AJ Cann blocking Malik Jackson.I think this is a point that shouldn't be overlooked and agree 100% I think our O line improves by default having to go up against the mountain of talent on our D line now We show less advertisements to registered users. I'm at the point where I don't see why we don't win around 7-8 games if we don't get bombarded with injuries with the likelyhood of definitely being .500. But 10-11 wins means we are a pretty high end team. Maybe it's just me being pessimistic but this defense was awful last year, and a huge reason for that was lack of pass rush. Malik/Marks will def help in the interior, but we have a lot of rookies that I'm optimistic on but it's just not all that common for rookie edge rushers to be uber productive. To "expect" to win double the games as last year just seems like a lot to me. Wouldn't surprise me if we did it, but I don't see how we can make that drastic of predictions. Top 3-4 draft picks have to hit and be productive I think to see us winning 10-11 games, which is possible but not sure it's likely.
Btw, I love Fowler. Probably more excited to see him out there in a Jags jersey than any of our rookies this year as crazy as that is, although MAYBE not quite as much as Jack. Was a big supporter of Fowler and am a huge fan of his (not a Gators fan at all either lol).
Let's not forget that we have many new starters on defense coming into a new scheme on a new team. It may take a good few games to gel properly.
The defense will be better next season theres no doubt about that. I'm dying to see the defense operate but this isn't going to be a top 15 unit off the bat. Just hope that Bradley takes the next step and our defense is at least able to keep us in games early on. Quote:Let's not forget that we have many new starters on defense coming into a new scheme on a new team. It may take a good few games to gel properly. This is one thing that I hope people realize. Bradley has been poor so far, but I hope he works out. Jack kept saying this is where he wanted to be and I believed him, what was his reason? "I love Gus Bradley." Same goes for pretty much all of our picks. Day works in our scheme due to the 3T spot and he can rush the passer all day, Ngakoue is a perfect LEO fit in this scheme, Ramsey is a perfect press corner on the outside in this scheme but would obviously gel in any scheme. Regardless, this draft gave us a lot of potential and these guys wanted to come here most likely because of Gus and this coaching staff. I really hope that with some legit talent on D we can work them up and feel better about Gus because a lot of these guys are obviously great fits on this defense. Now if only we can snag Jabrill Peppers next year I think I might have a heart attack.
Quote: Everything you mentioned makes sense. There will very likely be some growing pains. I agree with your take overall. Regarding the parts in bold... With the veteran free agent acquisitions as well as younger players maturing, I see this defense being MUCH improved. The rookies just drafted adds to that. My initial thought was that the team needed to finish at least at .500 for Bradley to keep his job. I do believe that the bar is set higher now. At the VERY LEAST the team must be above .500 and realistically they need to be around the 10-6 mark for Bradley to be safe. There are 10 kinds of people in this world. Those who understand binary and those who don't.
PreSeason. Am I the only one "on 10" anticipating seeing them live in competition? Practice and hopes are one thing, but if this Defense starts to look nasty THEN......mic drop moment.
Season Tix, Section 409
2023 and still counting.....SB will finally be ours soon enough. TLaw aka 'the prince that was promised' supporter.
I don't know.. I honestly think that the wealth of "Riches" is what is going to carry the team. Every position is a threat.. If Bradley understands the cerebral side of coaching, the X's and O's present quite a challenge for our opponents..
The hurdle now is to hit the season running.. WINNING THE OPENER … That is the key.. We need to not only win, but win going away.. This team needs to send the message to itself first, then repeat in week 2.. This year will be about 'managing' our confidence level and intensity level.. I don't see a game on the schedule we can not win. We can compete with any team in the NFL, and give them a solid run for their money. It will be all about the coaching.. I loved free agency and we had possibly the best draft in franchise history, but Fowler is going to be the guy that makes this entire thing click. The success of this defense is on his shoulders and something tells me he's on a mission to prove any doubters wrong. Yeah I hope he has a great season hopefully he can gel in the preseason and be ready to sack Rodgers week 1 a lot. :woot:
No Fun
Quote:This is one thing that I hope people realize. The off season couldn't have realistically gone any better in terms of giving us the talent we needed on defense. Veteran pass rusher would have been nice I suppose. Another aspect to consider is Todd Wash. What people say about him is he is very detail orientated and you either do it right or its not good enough. I already know he'll be better than Babich was.
Quote:The off season couldn't have realistically gone any better in terms of giving us the talent we needed on defense. Veteran pass rusher would have been nice I suppose. The difference in feel between Babich and Wash is night and day. I really like Wash, he sounds like a future head coach to me.
Quote:How can it NOT be real? There's just so MUCH.How can it NOT be real you ask? Simple... all these accolades for our new rookies are based on college achievements. Which is wonderful, except.... they've not yet set foot in a professional level game so all our hopes regarding these young men are based on speculation. I reserve the right to get too excited about rookies until I 'see it on the field in a real game'. Until then, it's all just hype. We show less advertisements to registered users. I say Fowler

At the very least, the Jaguars are now closer to 11-5 than they are to 5-11.even though the personnel are good players, there is no guarantee that you can put them on the field and they light the league on fire...They are rookies for the most part, they need to get used to the NFL speed, and the entire team needs to learn how to play with each other...you can't expect to grab a bunch of guys, some rookies, some coming back from injury, some just acquired, put them through a few OTAs and TC and then play like a well oiled machine....They have to learn each other, learn to trust each other and learn how to work together... YES there a [BLEEP] load of talent on the team, yes the defense will be great, but they need to learn to function together as a unit before they are going to set the league on fire Quote:Let's not forget that we have many new starters on defense coming into a new scheme on a new team. That's what I'm trying to say, and also free agent additions as well...We WILL be improved, but it could be sloppy at first with improvement coming by the game... |
