I don't get the logic of "If there's no one worth the 5th overall pick, Trade Back!"

Umm.. if there's no one worth the pick... no one is going to trade UP for it.

You shop the pick, if no one bites, you simply take the top player on your board.

Ha.

You're lucky JW is on her offseason hiatus because otherwise there would be a meltdown in here.

Sure jax ask sf they say no. Jags ask eagles they say no.

Jags ask cleveland they say no. Jags ask san diego they say no. See the pattern? There has to be a team willing to trade. This isnt cutsies.

If there's nobody worth the 5th overall pick for your team....

Different teams have different needs and value different types of players at different positions.

For instance, the Jaguars have zero need at QB at this point.  It's not worth the Jaguars' while to take a QB at 5.

However, there are teams BELOW the Jaguars that need a QB, who, under the right circumstances, might be willing to trade up for a player, even though the players the Jaguars want are either already off the board or not worth the 5th overall pick to the Jaguars.

Get it?

Quote:Why wouldnt they just wait until we release one of the qbs in the future? They could build a team in the meantime while we develop Blake or Goff, whoever we decide to release. It works both ways. I would not want us to be on the wrong side of that pick. You always have to consider worst case scenario.

Just because we dont land one of the top 4 guys doesnt mean there arent other guys who are still good and turn out to be better. Rodgers was better than the 20 guys before him, Watt and Kerrigan were better than most guys takem before them. We see it every year. Its not just them 4 or bust lol. You have to have a couple guys you are comfortable taking at 5.

Really? They'd wait four years until one of our QBs is released, and trust that they will be the team that signs him?

Sure, there are always guys found later who turn out better. But there's no guarantee that he's the one the Jags would pick. I once again bring up the example of Reggie Williams. The first tier in that draft was 8 players deep. There was still one left when the Jags, picking 9th, were on the board, because Atlanta took second-tier CB DeAngelo Hall. That one was Ben Roethlisberger. The Jags had no need of a QB having drafted Leftwich in 2003. So they passed over the position of no need and picked Reggie Williams. Good thing they didn't get stuck with Roethlisberger, eh?

It's actually worse than that. Caldwell is on record stating that he won't initiate an attempt to trade down. Some other team who wants to trade up has to call him before trading down is even on the table.

But in this draft there are several teams that would be interested in drafting the top QB. Niners, Eagles, Rams, Jets, maybe even the Saints with Brees getting old and expensive. I doubt that none of them would be willing to make an offer. The rub here is that the Ravens also don't need a QB, so teams might just wait for the Ravens pick. Caldwell needs to market the pick if he hopes to maximize the return in the OP scenario where the only first-tier players left are Buckner and a QB.

"For the same price as pick #6, you can get pick #5 and not have to worry that the Ravens will trade with someone else!"

Is this real?

We drafted Yeldon and signed Ivory? You really think someone buys that?

Good thing you're not the GM. Try explaining that one.

So how can we pull a smokescreen if we don't want him?

No. It just doesn't make any sense.

No one is going to believe that we would take a RB. So it's a useless smokescreen that no one would believe. You're just trying to throw something out and see if it sticks. It won't.

It's the same reason we can't pull a smokescreen for Goff or Wentz.
