Dolphins place transition tag on O.Vernon

Here's a sample deal I'd give Vernon:
I'd give him 5 years/$85 million with $40 fully guaranteed within the first two years and no signing bonus. It forces them to pay him big and immediately without the ability to defer anything to later years like teams are able to do with a signing bonus. 2016: $20 million (fully guaranteed) 2017: $20 million (fully guaranteed) 2018: $15 million 2019: $15 million 2020: $15 million Now two questions, will he sign that deal and would Miami match? They're 8m over the cap aren't they at the moment, so in that scenario they'd need to find 28m in cap space this year.
There's no way they can do it We show less advertisements to registered users. Accounts are free; join today!
The question is do WE want to give Vernon $85 million, $40 million of which is guaranteed over the first 2 years of the contract? This isn't Lawrence Taylor we're talking about.

LT would make $25 million per season if he was playing today. Vernon's a 25 year old pass rusher who has had 25.5 sacks the past three seasons with 11.5 in 2013 and was second in the league last season for pressures by a 4-3 end. Miami essentially set the market for Vernon at roughly $13 million. This deal pays him $17 million annually, so I don't think it's too radical. Obviously, I'd prefer to not pay him $40 million over the first two seasons, but it needs to be a deal that we are confident Miami doesn't match. The biggest thing Miami has done with the transition tag is that it essentially forces some teams hands by making them focus solely on Vernon or to move on from him. Teams first have to negotiate with Vernon and reach an agreement him, then Miami can twiddle their thumbs for seven days while the free agent market potentially dries up all around. We're one of the teams that can play their game and not necessarily have to worry too much.

Welp, $12.734 mil is the price tag, will a team bite for him?

Just to put a reference point out there... JJ Watt signed a 6 year $100m deal, worth $16.7m per year. Mario Williams deal in Buffalo was worth $16m per year. I realize if you want Olivier, you will need to overpay him. But, $17m per year seems slightly excessive. For roughly the same amount, you can likely sign Mario Williams ($10m/yr) and Tashaun Gipson ($7m or less/yr).
Oliver Vernon I would sign to a 6 year 90 million deal with 42 million guaranteed. front load the contract. But I just saw Mario Williams was released, it would be better to Get Williams at 8-10 million a year short term and sign Malik Jackson.

The bolded part is a fair point though. You do get to the subject of diminishing returns when you're paying a particular non-QB that much money.

You could argue that he still has his prime ahead of him and if he works out he could be a staple of the line for 7-8 years. Williams is 31, he might have 2-3 years with us but he's going to be a stop gap. We show less advertisements to registered users. Accounts are free; join today!

Id be fine with frontloading it and landing him. I just want some help on the D.

Thanks for that pic Tux, He keeps looking better and better to me.
Question I'm wondering is if we go big for Vernon, would we still have the room to go after Jackson, Gipson and Osemele considering the future contracts of our own players needing to be resigned.
