Pay Da Man!

#41

Quote:I suggested that they'd probably look to re-work his deal this off season in order to get him more in line with his production.  He's proven himself to be worth it, and I don't doubt the front office recognizes this.

However, even if they wait to extend a deal, it's not like the team won't have the resources available to pay him whatever the market has to offer, and I would think that his first priority would be to remain here with the QB and receiving tandem partner who have no doubt helped him become the player he has at this level.

Regardless, Hurns is going to get paid, and when he does, my guess is that it will almost certainly be by this team.

There's zero need to risk Hurns hitting free agency, and the last thing we need is talk about franchising him in the following offseason when ARob has to get paid. Just lock Hurns up now. It's an easy solution.

I think Yeldon will be on the list too.

Telvin will get paid along with Hurns.

Nobody else this offseason.

Blake Borltes (in a year or two it could be much more expensive to lock him up)

He will be expensive regardless of when we pay him, just the way it goes with QB's, especially as he continues to progress and become the HOF'er that he will be. SUPERBOWL'S INCOMING!

While I still contend that Hurns is the only one that needs to get done this offseason, I'll point out that Blake has a 5th year "club option" which means the Jags can keep paying him the 2-3 mil per year ( BTW -  a 13 mil bonus was already paid)  and then in his fifth year pay him the average of the top ten QB salaries in the league.  (which was around 18mil in 2015)

I kinda think they'll just start a new contract after his fourth year instead of the option, but they won't do anything until then because he's already been well paid compared to most rookies. There's zero urgency to pay Blake more money.

In contrast  -  Guys that were drafted lower and did not receive such a signing bonus and are eligible for a year 3 contract re-do  - may see a new deal at that point.

If I understand the CBA correctly - this means a guy like Telvin would be eligible (and likely) for a new deal during the 2016 season.

I'd say only Hurns right now due to him being an undrafted player. The rest got a decent contract worth playing through. I don't know the exacts of Hurns contract, but I doubt it's anything crazy. He definitely deserves a pay raise!

Not sure what the confusion here is for some folks.

Never argue with idiots. They drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.

I think everyone isn't used to having good players and wants to get them locked up, but don't fret, they're not losing the likes of Bortles, Hurns, Robinson, Telvin or Linder. Idzik was a good hire and has done a great job with the cap. I think they've through forward enough to know a lot of the contract will be due around the same time frame. They'll still be Jags in 4 years.

There's no risk in paying the guy now.   We can all see, he's a total professional.   He won't quit just because he gets a big payday.

I agree about trying to lock Hurns up sooner rather than later, as most also say in this thread. I'm curious about what kind of contract he's worth? I read someone say franchising him could be an option down the road if not resigned. I would disagree with that option.

If I was Dave I would give Hurns a 6 YR/ 40$ Million dollar contract.

I know people will not agree with this, but this is my personal opinion.

This is like Eric Decker's contract 5 YR/ 36.5$ Million.

I would give Hurns the extra year due to age. I believe he deserves a contract like this because IMO Robinson and Hurns are the best duo in the league also the youngest.

I'd guess something like 5 years - 28 mil with 18 mil guaranteed.

I don't know why they say Telvin. He's sure to wait another year just like ARob and Linder.

As for Hurns, locking him up is a no brainer.

I'm of course totally on board with locking him up, but as a free agent he'd be restricted. The Jaguars conceivably could pad his stats this year to intentionally drive up his worth and then place a first round tender on him after the season with the intention of someone giving up a first round pick to get a guy they found in undrafted free agency. But again, I'd rather have Hurns than what would probably be a late first round pick.
