Jaguars 2016 Free Agents

Anger does a fine job punting. He's never been cited as a reason for losses, and complaints against him amount to nitpicking. He may not be a pro bowl punter, but he's darn consistent, and I've seen teams like the Packers struggle for years looking for a good punter.

Run blocker and loves being a Jag, could end his career in Jacksonville, of course for the right price, but he's not getting anything special in the market. I know many are critical of Lewis, and he's not been a Gronk type receiver for us, but I will always respect Lewis and I think he's been a great player for us for many years. I share your thoughts on Lewis. He's still a fantastic run blocker...not bad at pass blocking either... and he can be exciting when he actually does catch the ball. It's like he's going to break the Jaguars bank to sign him.

Most of the angst over Angerer in this thread related to franchising him, which would be asinine.

Quote:I'd rather us just draft a mid round QB for development over everyone available at this point. Draft, develop, if he turns into a quality product then flip him for a pick or two.No way would I want a rookie QB backing up Bortles, maybe by year 4, we still need a vet backup QB Walters, Davis and Jones def want back Jonas Grey and Nic Jacobs too

Quote:Who to keep... who to let walk... I'd keep most of this list. Keep Henne if he's willing to take the minimum, otherwise go younger and develop a guy behind Bortles. Keep Marcedes if he is willing to take the minimum. He won't be a hot name on the market, so I wouldn't be suprised if he was willing to stay. Jacobs can do what Lewis does, though. Get rid of Wiz. If you can't find a replacement veteran for Wiz, then draft one or let's go with Bowanko. Branch most likely won't get any major interest in free agency, so maybe bring him back on a 1 year prove it deal. Probably won't become what we expected when he was drafted, but he could be a nice rotational guy. The only guys we NEED to keep are Davis and Jones. We will see what Gray can do tomorrow as the main ball carrier. Anger is a punter, so if he wants too much money, he can go.

He struggles with control on his punts. Like I alluded to earlier, I can't even begin to count how many times this season I've seen a punt of his sail ten yards past the gunners--usually with good hangtime, sometimes not--into the arms of a returner more than happy to rip off a nice return. It seems that when he does try to take a little off his swing and float the ball instead of driving it, he comes up short. That's not to say that every punt is awful or that he's the worst punter ever, because he's not. A lot of that just comes from residual Gene hate. In a lot of ways, at least on this board, there's more, ahem, anger about Anger than there is about Gabbert when it comes to Gene's tenure. I think he could be pretty easily replaced by a rookie, drafted or otherwise, or by a street guy that's been to a camp or two, maybe done a week on a roster here and there as an injury sub. That's not to say there's no circumstance in which I'd want Anger back, but I do think that he can be upgraded without much effort to a guy that's got more consistency to his game and is a better directional punter.
No one worth keeping really. Maybe Davis, but I haven't seen much of him this year.

I've never heard a crowd ooh and aww over a punter before until that. His kicks literally just sounded different coming off his foot. What happened to that guy?

Quote:I always wonder where the "Henne is a quality backup" came from? Is it because hes old? He's Blake's best buddy. It's worth $2 million a year for Henne to just do that.

Quote:I just might puke if we re-sign Branch. He was a literal ghost the first half of the season. The Jaguars have one of the worst pass rushes I've ever seen. Branch had his blind squirrel finds a nut moment against the colts in the second quarter, doesn't mean he belongs in the NFL.

Quote:</blockquote> I'll break it down for you. The top punter in the league next year will probably make about the franchise tag amount near $4.5 mil. It drops from there. A borderline top 5 punter would make just over $3 mil per. A borderline top 10 punter about $2 mil per. A borderline top 15 punter about $1.5 mil. After the top 20 it's about minimum wage. Anger is at least an average starting punter, or a borderline top 15, so he'll at least get $1.5 mil. He very well could get $2 mil per, but he's not about to command much more than that. The top punters are making over $2.5 mil. </blockquote>

I was pretty happy with him that year he nearly hit 10 sacks. We knew he was being schemed but the line was extremely dominant that year. I think Branch simply isn't a player that can produce without others producing around him. Those players are "just guys" and should be allowed to walk in favor of bringing in another guy to develop.
Can't wait to see whats next.

I had to do a discount doublecheck when I read "nearly hit 10 sacks." His one big season he had six sacks, and I suspect he'll never hit that number again.
