Lots of good stuff today - Robinson 120+ including huge plays against Revis.  Hurns makes a few amazing plays every game and had 120+ also.  The defense was great against the run, but didn't get the turnovers when they presented themselves. 

 

The offense played pretty well against a great defense.  They took sacks but also made big plays. 

 

Gus is the unluckiest coach in NFL history.

Too many mistakes. Repeated mistakes. The number of turnovers is way too high.


Pass protection and run blocking were bad today. Blake had a few flashes, and an equal number of bad plays. JT continues to be MIA.

I don't think pass protection was as bad as it looked. Bortles had one play I remember where if he rolled left he could have run for 20 yards easy. He stayed in the pocket and tried to pass. Hard to fault him for that as he always keeps his eyes downfield. Just something I noticed. I feel his internal clock is a little long.

THERE IS A SKELETON INSIDE OF YOU.

 

RIGHT NOW. THIS IS NOT A JOKE.

After a bye week that left the Jaguars within shouting distance of first place despite a 2-5 record, the Jaguars went up against the Jets in the Meadowlands.  My thoughts...

 

1.  Three turnovers in the last 5 minutes of the game, including on successive plays.  Of course, when a fumble occurs at midfield that could have given the Jaguars the ball in great field position, Poz jumps right on it and can't recover it #becauseJaguars.

 

2.  One of the most frustrating things about watching this defense is seeing them succeed in the first two downs, getting third and long yardage, and allowing the opposing offenses to convert.  Today was no different.  In the first half, the Jets had 3rd and 12, 3rd and 8, and 3rd and 7 and converted them all.  One was a pass to Ivory over the middle.  Another was a 3rd and 8, reduced to 3rd and 3 by penalty.  They played decently overall, but there were two blown coverages in the second half that cost this team big time.

 

3.  Special teams continues to let this team down.  After Jacksonville took the lead in the first quarter after having good field position, the Jaguars could have controlled field position the entire first quarter, but instead on the kickoff, they allowed a long kick return giving the Jets field position at midfield.  They allowed another long punt return, then finally, Marshall fumbled the punt, precluding any chance of a Jaguars rally.  But hey, at least Myers got us the free sub.

 

4.  The Jaguars were whipped on the offensive line of scrimmage.  At least six sacks were registered, including the 4th quarter fumble by Bortles that stopped a Jaguars drive inside the red zone (though that one is on Bortles for holding the ball too long.  There were several other pressures and not much room to run.  The line must do better.

 

5.  Bad call on the Walters "incompletion" on the sideline.  Worse because review clearly showed both feet down in bounds and control of the ball. The whole purpose of replay is to get the call right when there is clear and convincing evidence the call on the field was wrong.  I don't know what was unclear or unconvincing about that replay.

 

6.  Though Hurns and Robinson both had drops, they both had good games against a good secondary.

 

7.  Bottom line:  While the result was disappointing to be sure, I am not as angry after this game as I was after the Tampa and Indy losses.  Jacksonville had momentum in parts of the second half, and as the game wore on, I thought the Jaguars had a legitimate chance to win until Poz didn't recover that fumble.  I think against a lesser opponent, Jacksonville wins this game.  Unlike in games past, the team didn't let down in the aftermath of a bad play.  Despite the loss, this team showed signs of growth.

You mentioned, "the Jaguars had a legitimate chance to win until Poz didn't recover that fumble." I agree with this, although they had a few chances to pull out a W in those final minutes. The Jaguars practically had the game in the bag, and then it fell apart like dominoes going down with one catastrophe after another. You had the blown protection that led to Blake fumbling...then Poz' failure to record...the the muffed punt...then allowing an easy catch and thrown to Marshall after containing him all day...and finally the ugly panic throw at the end into coverage. Any of those situations go different and maybe they pull it off.


 

That said, this is a Jets team that few thought the Jaguars had any chance of even playing with, and really the Jaguars flat out played much better football until this failure to finish the game. The Jaguars started out in a hole, but game roaring back seize control of the game. I really thought we had a W there, but the Jets are more of a veteran organization and stepped up their game to secure the win for themselves at the end when it mattered the most. The Jaguars are oh so close to being a really good team so it's hard to accept that we're just not there yet. Still, there's every reason to stay the course. The Jets are appear to be the toughest team on the schedule after their bye, so things should only get easier from here on out. Besides, we're still only 1 1/2 games out of first place.

It's almost like you have to pick your poison. I look at this team compared to the Giants, and it's like we're polar opposites. The Giants defense is absolute garbage with players practically puking on the field week after week except they've been able to secure game winning turnovers. We're the opposite. Our offense is looking like one of the more formidable offenses in the league except we keep having game losing turnovers. Meanwhile, our defense is average with some strong points like our ypc allowed in the run game just like the Giants offense is average with some strong points like OBJ.

If Marshall fields that punt cleanly, I think we win the game. Tragic.


Anyone else curious as to why we are spending tens of millions of dollars on Thomas and barely integrate him into the offense? I thought for sure with the bye week and a the issues at safety the Jets have we were gonna see Blake take some shots down the seam.

 

I guess an explanation could be that because of Thomas' injury they don't have chemistry... or something... but it hasn't been ideal so far.

6. Yeldon needs help. He's not going to be the type of back that can make something from nothing. That's not an indictment of his ability, just a statement that if offensive linemen are falling backwards into him, it's going to bring him down.

8. As much as I hate Gus' coaching, substitutions, time management and sideline demeanor, it's not always his fault. This one's on the players.

 

 

Funny, but Myers was on point today. Not only was he five-for-five on kicks including one from 45, but they were all high and right down the middle. None were even close to not being good. I know he had a kickoff fall short, but keep in mind he also had three kickoffs reach the end zone. It's the KO coverage that needs to improve.

A few things I came away with from this game


We have legit offensive weapons


Telvin will be a pro bowl caliber lb for us


Bortles has no effs to give about Revis island


We still have guys that are trying to do too much


We have little speed on defense

All things considered with this game with all the mistakes, no one could say that they didn't see the possibility of Bortles winning it late..... that's a big leap from where we've been

After having time to sleep on this, I am still harping on the play of the special teams.

 

There are those who argue Bortles killed this team.

 

Yes, Bortles' fumble hurt a lot, but the defense did the job and got the ball back with time for the offense to score.  The last INT killed a very slim chance of the team to win, but let's face it, the odds of the team going 90 yards with no timeouts against that defense were slim.

 

But it was that Marshall fumble that put the Jets up by two scores at the end of the game.

 

Last year, poor special teams play cost this team three (3) winnable games.

 

So far, halfway through the season, Special teams have cost us three winnable games this year:  Indy, Tampa, now the Jets.

 

Think about the Jaguars sitting at 5-3 instead of 2-6.  How would we view the season?  What would Jaguars fans think about the future of this team?  If special teams continues to cost this team games this year, it could spell the end for Bradley, which could spell the end for Olson and Hackett, which could derail Bortles' development.

 

I'm not sure how Mallory has avoided the angst of the fanbase, but he deserves as much scrutiny, if not more, than our old offensive coordinator.  Literally, the future of this team depends on Special teams getting things right-or not.
