So, stop trying?  What's your point.  Caldwell has only been here 3 and clearly shown he can acquire talent in the draft.  You don't piss away picks on temporary players when your team ain't going anywhere this year.

Gene Smith wasn't building for anything. That's why he traded away draft picks for players (Lowery, McCown, Smiley) and regularly moved up in the draft and traded away more picks.

Just because the team sucked doesn't mean they were building for the future.

Exactly.  Lesson learned.  If anything, we should be the team trying to trade away players for picks, not vice versa. This team isn't a contender yet, and definately not "one player away" type situation. Don't know that we have much to offer in that realm tho, Clemons?

But that's the thing, we have an opportunity to claim the division this year and some of these players on the trade block could help us do that.

Here's the thing:  The Jags aren't super bowl competitive.  The goal is to be in the next few years.  You don't go all in this year when the team isn't close, mortgaging the future.  Dumb.

So 'claim the division' and get blown out in the playoffs. Awesome goal.

Yup, and trade picks to do it. Brilliant!

I think you are severely overrating a few things here. The impact some of these guys would actually have. And the likelihood that these guys will actually be traded.

So a late round pick is mortgaging the future?

Quality underrated post. Nobody is saying trade a 1st rounder but this team could really benefit from kicking the tires and seeing if there are people available at a discount. If Vernon Davis goes for a late rounder, I'm sure we can pick up at least a situational pass rusher.

The mantra, yes.  We need more picks.  You're thinking lines with Gene.

If we could get a young pass rusher for a late round pick with the idea that he'll help the team longterm, then do it.  Problem is, other teams aren't going to do this trade.  Gotta be realistic. Pass rushers are at a premium in this league.

I would gladly take a handful of magic beans for Gerhart right now.
Only a chump boos the home team!

This. I dont get some people on here that think so highly of a late round pick. We have terrible pass rushers. Next years draft and free agent period aren't strong in this department. You would rather stick with Branch and Clemons another year? Mediocrity is very big on this board.
