The great big Blackmon thread (merged)

Agreed.  This then makes me wonder, how much does the inside brass really know that they have not passed on.  And what's with the non disclosure references regarding reinstatement applications?

Success is a journey, not a destination.  Go all out Mighty Jaguars.

I was always a big backer of JB coming back.  he would be our number 1 like he played the last 4 games he played for us.  a beast with a hack qb.  he doesn't want to play football cuz he likes to smoke more.  im pissed at that but its his life.  what could have been.  happy trails JB.  I really hope im wrong but that is the way it looks.

Yes this team has drafted horribly over it's short lifetime and yes there are notable bust such as the fortune we gave up for Derek Harvey, Soward, or Gabbert.

The things that set Blackmon apart is:

A. He was a top 5 pick

and

B. Worse is that he had superstar potential but decided to drink and smoke it away

All signs point to Justin Blackmon being done in the NFL.  It's one thing if you don't have the talent: Harvey, Soward, Gabbert (coward).  It's another thing if you have that star potential and throw it away for some drugs and stupidity.

We really needed yet another Blackmon thread.

The problem is that all of the guys you mentioned had the talent. Harvey wasn't the ninth pick of the draft for funsies--he was a difference maker at UF who was, iirc, not exactly the most dedicated player in the NFL. Soward was a speed demon who drank and smoked his career away. Gabbert was talked about as a potential first overall pick right up until a couple of days before the draft. Talent wasn't the issue with any of those guys. The biggest talent miss for the Jaguars in round one might be Renaldo Wynn, who was a capable end/tackle swing player throughout his time here, but never really a dominant player.

The bigger issue, imo, is that the Jaguars have drafted talented players in the first round who've shown up and given it far less than 100%. That's where the shortcoming in this team's drafting has been, not in reaching for sub-standard talent.

...ok, we might have reached for sub-standard talent a bit while Gene Smith was making the calls. I'm looking at you, Tyson Alualu.

Probably the best way to view the situation is the Jaguars current GM and HC weren't around when the Justin Blackmon pick was made.   As long as the Jags organization uses what happened with Blackmon as a learning tool,   the team has the potential to have major accomplishments in the next few seasons.

I dont see the point in continually making threads on a player that no one has any valuable information on. Im just as irritated by Blackmon as any other fan, but its just -not- worth talking about anymore, seriously.
All I need is Jaguars football and my dogs

Harvey only played football for like 2 years before he was drafted.

this thread might end up being the biggest thread bust of today.

Coughlin when asked if winning will be a focus: "What the hell else is there? This is nice and dandy, but winning is what all this is about."

Gabbert set this team back 4 years. Blackmon did not. That makes him the biggest bust imo

I'm still amazed Dave Caldwell got a 6th Round pick for Blaine Gabbert.

I would put Gabbert being a bigger bust slightly ahead of Blackmon due to the importance of the position. I, too, was amazed that they actually got a draft pick in trade for him.

Not to mention the talent difference. When Blackmon was on the field he was a force. When Gabbert was on the field the other team was breathing a sigh of relief.

I wonder how much of Blackmon's substance abuse problems are directly related to having Gabbert as his QB? You kind of wonder if he was self medicating.

I'm so damn done with all this Blackmon crap.. Either he comes back or he doesn't, I don't care anymore. It's great that he cleaned himself up, but it's time for this team to move on from him finally..

They have moved on. They spent two second round picks on receivers last year. They are likely spend a first or second day pick again on a receiver.
