Dave Caldwell Is No Longer Your GM

(This post was last modified: 01-09-2017, 08:42 PM by Pwmccorm1216.)

The Jaguars Presser is saying Caldwell and Coach will report to Coughlin.

This isnt a bash Caldwell, just reporting the facts. Doesnt mean Caldwell wont be making the calls, just he has to report to Tom Coughlin.

Quote:that is an incredibly ignorant thing to say. Im not trying to bash Caldwell, I'm saying most of the people are saying now. Tom Coughlin is essentially head of the personnel department. Dont think he was hired just to twiddle his thumbs.

No, this thread is saying that Caldwell is just Coughlin's puppet and that's not accurate.

This just compounds the bad news.. TC's track record in this area is laughably bad.

Quote:Tom has the final say on draft picks and free agency signings. Caldwell has been demoted basically.
I'm sure Dave's not thrilled, but after hiring Gus, extending his contract and drafting Bortles over Carr he is lucky to still have a job.

Maybe he'll bring back Gene Smith. Coughlin was always Gene's biggest cheerleader.

Agreed. I think Caldwell has proven he can identify talent. I don't think he's a puppet at all. I do think it probably sends a message that he could do better, and Tom is a guy who will demand more from the GM and the rest of the staff.
Never argue with idiots. They drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.

Besides simply being the boss, I wonder what Coughlin's actual responsibilities include. Is he going to do scout or is he just the guy who signs the paperwork?

I dont think having to answer to Coughlin is necessarily a "puppet". I just think Coughlin has the final say at the end of the day. They obviously value Caldwell or they wouldn't have retained him let alone extend him. They want this turned around quickly, pretty much Caldwell will have to take a slight step back before he can take a step forward. Obviously, the results speak for themselves and Khan wants the team to improve. Caldwell kept his job but the results have been bad.

My hope is he has no say in personnel decisions.

Again, multiple reports now saying he is the final say. Both the coach and GM report to him.

Yea, it would be terrible if he recommends we draft guys like Boselli, Stroud, Henderson, Brackens or Fred Taylor, trade for guys like Brunell or pick up free agents like Jimmy Smith, Keenan McCardell or Leon Searcy !

Means nothing. The Phins did this too, but the VP of football ops still had no say when it came to the roster. The GM had full control even though he reports to the VP. It depends on what his duties are. It seems the VP's control varies from team to team.

I highly doubt Tom Coughlin took a front office job without control. We will find out Thursday but all indications are that Coughlin will have the final say. Caldwell will have to get every move he wants made passed by Coughlin.

Something doesn't add up.

If Caldwell is still the man that acquires talent, what does Coughlin do?

If Coughlin has final say with regards to free agency and who we draft, what's the purpose of Caldwell?

We will find out more Thursday, I suspect Caldwell will be doing the drafting and FA acquisitions but he has to get all his moves approved by Coughlin.

So Coughlin will be GM by proxy…

I think you are wrong on this and that Coughlin is going to be more of an advisor than the boss. Caldwell will not need to have his selections/decisions APPROVED by anyone, but rather, encourage/discourage decisions by Tom - aka, Dave is the head man on the football side.

You can quote twitter and other "reports" all you want but the fat lady hasn't finished singing.

More Coughlin authority and input, and less Caldwell, would be perfectly fine by me.

Hopefully it's along the lines of:

Caldwell proposes we draft a bum like Cyprien or Bortles.

Coughlin smacks him with a rolled up newspaper and says something like "ok sonny boy, time for the big boys to pick the players. Now run along to Starbucks and get us some coffee, and be back by 8:00. And if you're not back by 7:55, you'll be fined 10k."

Im not quoting twitter. Its from the Jaguars press release. You all should know Tom Coughlin by now. Guy is not going to settle and twiddle his thumbs. Do you really think that? Who do you think was that Super Bowl coach that wanted Marrone as the coach? Who ended up being the coach? It isnt twitter rumors anymore, its a fact that Tom Coughlin will be the Jaguars VP of Operations with both the GM and Coach reporting to him. Ryan O Halloran, Dan Hicken have already said that Coughlin will have the final say in the decision making.

I dont know what people are debating about or what there is to argue. This is now a fact. 10 am on Thursday is the introduction, get used to the name Tom Coughlin. Hes essentially the GM.
