His rookie contract is expiring. As we saw from the 2nd contracts of players like Riley Cooper of all people, and Decker last year, that gives you an indication of what Shorts will be commanding. Riley Cooper got 5 years/ 25 MIL and 10 guaranteed and is much LESS of a resume than Shorts. So Cooper's contract will only be the extreme bottom of the frame work of a new deal. With the salary cap continuing to rise, so will the contracts. Shorts will probably command something closer to Decker money. 

 

While I agree with you on potentially trading CSIII for Boone (it won't happen unless the Jags offer more btw), Cecil isn't a guy that will demand a big contract. I expect him to get something similar to what Doug Baldwin (3 yrs $13M) received from the Seahawks.

First off, you're right.  CSIII for Boone won't happen.  That's my main point, and I don't see the Jags sweetening the pot by giving up their best receiver right now AND draft picks to get a Guard. 

 

You're also right that Shorts probably won't command a huge contract.  But, you're not the bar stool diva who must spin this thing up to the point where people will support him.

Howdy Jags fans.  To start off on topic, I think that just about every player in this league (with very few exceptions) is expendable.  A wide receiver that has never had a 1,000 yard season and is one severe concussion away from retirement easily falls into this category as long as the price is right.  Although Cecil has potential and has had some great games, he could easily be replaced - and his replacements are likely on the roster already.

 

On a side note:

FBT's play by play posts and comments about the OTAs  = really cool.  Been reading them for years.  Long before I became a member here 4 years ago.

FBT's constant stalking of nearly every post and comment that TMD makes, usually including personal insults about his profession = really, really old and lame.

 

FBT, when I click on your profile, it mentions that your interests are "Jags, politics, faith, and family."  I am not aware of any faith that condones bashing other people based on their career or status in life.  Just my two cents.

You don't trade an explosive receiver for a guard no matter who he is.

 

1. I wouldn't classify CSIII as an "explosive" receiver, if CSIII is "explosive" than guys like TY Hilton and Desean Jackson are running at the speed of light.

 

2. If the 49ers are dumb enough to trade a probowl caliber guard for an above average receiver the Jags would take it all day long.

I disagree with this wholeheartedly; he doesn’t come off as not being a fan to me, he can come off as a bit over zealous and sometimes insecure, but a not fan? Give me a break, there  are guys like TMD in every fan base.

Alex Boone (if you take PFF's averages over the past two years) has been a top 10 guard in the league, he's a mammoth of a human being that consistently creates running lanes and is solid is pass pro. I don't think Cecil Shorts would be enough
in a trade for Alex Boone, I believe Alex is the better player.  If the Jaguars have a chance to trade CSIII for Alex Boone straight up, it's a no brainer, you're essentially improving two positions with one move. I like Cecil, but at the end of the day he's a smallish receiver that doesn't bring a lid lifting element to an offense with a myriad of soft tissue injuries.

But Cooper got more than that and he's produced a single half-season of good football. I anticipate Shorts getting a contract somewhere between Cooper & Decker's money. The fact we are starting Henne sort of proves we are not in it to win it, so there is no advantage to keeping Shorts around. Plus, we have plenty of talent at WR to take his position. Trade him for a position we need and can improve upon. Let the young receivers gain experience in his stead.

I think the only way he get's drastically more than what Doug Baldwin got is if the salary cap goes up (it's expected to with the new TV deals so I guess that's possible), otherwise the two players have similar stats and are similar players. Baldwin (because of better QB play and a deeper receiver core) has been targeted a lot less than Shorts as well, so he's been the more efficient receiver, we'll see how it plays out.

I don't care if you are a dishwasher or the President of the United States - it has nothing to do with your opinions on a football message board.   To constantly bring up your work and call you princess, etc. just shows the insecurity of the person attacking you.   The bully is usually the most insecure guy in the room.   The one thing that is obvious is that this site has set the bar to be a moderator very, very low.
