You don't need to increase a market size to increase demand. A better quality product at the same price will increase demand. It just means a higher percentage of  people will be willing to spend their disposable income and time on jag games vs. competing options. Just look at New Orleans. They have lost a significant amount of their market since Katrina, yet are experiencing some of the best attendance in their history. Why? Because they are fielding the best product in their history.

 

That being said, the mere promise of a better product won't increase demand. Hype like what Jones and Tebow had doesn't put people in the seats, but living up to that hype would have.

 

Drafting Manziel won't fill the stands. Drafting Manziel and him living up to Johnny Football would fill the stands and you wouldn't need people flying in from Texas to make that happen. Understood, but if you want to maintain a proper scaling of the stadium for the market, you can't lean as much on fluctuations (small as they actually are) based on one player or coach being brought in.  You're supporting that premise as well based on the last paragraph.  Drafting Manziel isn't going to fix anything.  If he succeeds, it will help fill the seats. It's still not going to change the fact that the stadium needs to be the size it is with the tarps in place.  If they were building a stadium today for this market, it would be smaller than the one we have currently with the tarps.  It would probably be 6-7000 seats smaller.

I say if he is there at three go ahead and grab him. The possible upside to him is huge from a marketing standpoint and maybe his game will convert to the NFL and the downside is not so bad anymore with the rookie wage scale if he sucks at this level. Now, if Dave can trade down and get him that would be even better.,

I don't think many would be disappointed if Dave pulled the trigger at 3 for Manziel just because of the instant gratification it would provide to this franchise in the eyes of the media.  My concern is down the road a year or two when / if the league has figured him out.  If Caldwell's assessment that his game won't change much from year 1 to year 2, that's a concern.

That's too much of an NFL elitist attitude.  Teddy got a $400 million facelift for his college program!  He'll sell enough tickets to expand the stadium! 

 

I love the college mentality and how these folks somehow thinks it translates to the NFL.  The reality is it doesn't, and in the end, Manziel will be drafted by a team that feels he will make a significant difference to the product on the field.  All the other noise is just that.
