There are at least a dozen current backup QBs better than Henne. That says plenty.

I'm not convinced there are a dozen backups available that could play better as a starter for the Jags in 2014. I'd be surprised if there were any really and in any case don't you think Caldwell would be going after them if there were?

Honestly, I don't even know why the initial question was asked. We all know what we get with Henne. He's servicable for what was out there and what we have for right now. Don't expect great things, but expect better than Gabbert.

If there was truly a way to upgrade the Henne position by snatching someone off another roster who was available to be pursued, Caldwell would have followed that path.

Correction, if they were worth the price to get them he'd pursue.

 

Henne is bad, really bad, but that doesn't mean guys that would require picks in trade for them are more worth the team's time.

 

There's no point in trading for someone just because they're better than Henne. There is a lot of room between Henne and "ELITE". If they're not real upper tier starter material then there's no purpose in trading for them even though there really are a lot of backups that are better than Henne.

That's the only reason Henne wound up as the starter. He was better than Gabbert. Lure only the starter now because there I lent a better option available...yet. That guy will eventually get here. Henne isn't the long term solution.

We seem to be arguing the same point. Just because other teams have backups that are better than Henne doesn't mean it's worth it to give up draft picks for a slightly better backup quality guy.

Vick, McCown, Fitzpatrick, Sanchez, Cassel, and Freeman are no question better than Henne to me. Tjax, Hill, and Flynn maybe as well. All of them were FA this year. I don't begrudge Dave for not going after them because as a bridge to a true franchise QB who really cares it's fine to just keep the guy who has been in the system, and even though all of those guys were probably upgrades they aren't the long term answer either so it's whatever. 

 

The point was moreso that he's pretty much the worst starting QB in the league, or ideally a mid level backup.

I agree with why the Jags kept him and what you said, I have no problems with that reasoning to keep a slightly worse QB instead of rocking the boat when it's just a bridge QB anyway.

How he worked patiently behind Gabbert played a big part for sure.  He's not a problem guy.  Team player and just as important, he has his teammates' respect.  That's about all you really want from a role player.  He realizes he's not the long term solution.

Exactly.  He's not going to rock the boat when they do make the switch, and I think that will bode well for him as the Jaguars probably will be less inclined to dump him before his contract is done.  That will give them a veteran QB to back up the rookie, and then another rookie we can develop in the hopes that he'll be come Rob Johnson down the road.

 

Henne is a team player who understands his role.
