Theres a Ryan Mallet in every draft. If you really want a pocket QB with a million dollar arm that makes questionable decisions when the pressures on draft him late.

 

Just draft Mettenberger in the third. He's younger and you get him for four years. If you really want Mallett, wait a year for when he hits the open market.

And in the end, none of this matters. 

 

Ultimately, what matters here is where these guys were in their careers.  Brunell had shown enough in his limited opportunities to warrant consideration from 2 teams.  He landed in Jacksonville, and the rest is history.

 

Schaub parlayed a good run in Atlanta into a great contract in Houston.  How'd that work out for them?

 

Your examples are just straw men. 

 

Mallett has shown nothing to warrant trading a high draft pick for his services.  It's irrelevant in the end where he's at in his contract. 

 

Schaub hardly did squat in Atlanta prior to being dealt to Houston.

I remember we played them in 2006 and Schaub was brilliant. 

 

That was why Houston was willing to give up so much to get him. He was considered a hot commodity.

Most QB that would be traded in this similar situation would be nearing the end of their initial rookie contracts. 

 

Difference is, they actually showed something, even a little bit, in NFL.  Mallett hasn't done anything, and was terrible even in pre-season.

Oh please, the only reason they drafted him (having Brady securely in tow) was with the intent of trying to get a windfall in a trade later on. They miscalculated because Brady has missed zero time to injury since, and there was no available snaps to give to showcase Mallett.

Mallett didn't fall to the 3rd because of perception that he couldn't play - he fell because of alleged off field concerns.

Tell me....which Patriots QB including Brady, other than Mallett have looked good in Patriots preseason over the last several years.
