Eagles Vs. Lions

#61

Quote:No I'm not. That is why no Super Bowl has ever been played outside in a city that gets snow.
Laughing That's not because fans don't want it played up north. That's because of advertisers and all of the events before the Super Bowl. Most fans have no problem with the idea of a snowy Super Bowl and I'd imagine most of them would actually enjoy it even more than a "perfect conditions" game. Which game do you think generated the most buzz this week? The Eagles Lions game. Why? It was snowing hard. Hell, the sideline reporter for the Eagles Lions game was trending on Twitter (admittedly for potentially different reasons). It was the top game on the NFL subreddit. It was consistently the headline game on nfl.com.

The weather isn't a legitimate excuse for the Lions loss.  The bottom line is the Lions had a 14-0 lead when the snow was falling harder than it was  later in the game.  The Eagles executed much better from that point on.

After 7 straight games of excellent run Defense,   the Lions couldn't stop the Eagles on the ground in the last 19 or 20 minutes of the game.  Missed tackles,  bad angles,  poor run fits,  and getting beat at the line of scrimmage all contributed to the Eagles destroying the Lions on the ground.   Both teams played in these conditions.   While the officials made some bad calls against the Lions,  there was more than enough opportunities to overcome it.   What a waste of a stellar game by Jeremy Ross.

One other bright spot in what became a sea of darkness was the play of Rashean Mathis in the first half.  Mathis deflected 4 passes in the first half.

It's part of having home field advantage if you have an outdoor stadium in a climate that there's a realistic chance for games to be played in snow,  cold,  and other winter like elements.    The Eagles struggled with the elements in the first half.   To their credit,  they used them to their advantage in the 2nd half.  Chip Kelly did a great job of making adjustments.

One thing for sure,  if the Lions would have played 60 minutes of football instead of around 35 minutes of football,  I would have had fond memories of this game in large part because of the elements.    I'm sure millions of fans around the country and beyond enjoyed this game because of the weather conditions,  much like you and many others that participated in this thread did.   It brought back memories for me of many snow games,  including the Jaguars win in Pittsburgh in 2007 and the Patriots OT playoff win over the Raiders in the 2001 playoffs.

Fun fact: This game was the first time in 56 years that no points were scored by kickers. This was the last one.

I haven't seen that much snow on a field in a NFL game in a long time.

The visuals were very, very cool. Not sure how it was to be sitting in it though. Can't blame any of the no shows.

I have to agree with JW when it comes to the playoffs and Super Bowl - I'd like to see decent weather so we get to see the best football. All Super Bowls in San Diego!

I mean, I don't want to see the Jaguars lose Super Bowl LXXXIX because Mike Hollis III misses a field goal in a snow storm.

The sun's not yellow, it's chicken.

The temperature was 27 degrees IIRC according to the broadcast on FOX.  That coupled with snow is perfect football weather in my eyes and there is nothing anyone will do to convince me otherwise.  There's no convincing me that Super Bowls should be played in "decent weather" and you aren't going to convince me that "decent weather" produces the best football.  I disagree completely, games like the Lions vs Eagles cause teams to adapt and play their best football.  The Eagles adapted very well, the Lions didn't, Eagles win.  It was the game of the year to watch and I hope we get to see more games in snow this year.  In this era of crappy pass happy football we finally got to see teams have to take to the ground and adapt their play to the conditions.  I see enough of the passing teams in their warm weather games, give me a cold snowy football game any day over that.

I don't blame anyone for wanting to see football in warm weather, it's an opinion.  I fail to see how it produces better football, though, and that part I cannot agree with.  It's all personal preference.

Well said, D6, the Eagles adjusted a little better than the Lions that day.  I wish that Reggie Bush had been healthy to see how he handled the weather. Calvin Johnson is just a spectacle to watch regardless of weather.  He's the perfect WR.  Size, speed, superior athletic ability, and great hands.  On top of that, I've never seen anything but that he's a top notch guy as well.  There are certain players in a generation you should watch, because they are special talents, the best of the best.  Calvin Johnson is one of the guys on that short list.

Thanks, Scarecrow.

While Reggie Bush didn't have a good performance in bad weather at Pittsburgh last month, one of his best games in the NFL was in suburban Buffalo in December, 2011 when he was with the Dolphins.   Bush had a career high 203 yards rushing that afternoon against the Bills.   Flurries were coming down during that game, which made the field slippery.

There's no telling what would have happened in Philadelphia last Sunday if Bush was relatively healthy. But there's no question that the Lions miss his big play ability as a rusher and receiver,  when not available.  The Lions didn't truly recover from what looks like a career ending injury to Jahvid Best until Bush was signed back in March of this year.   Even w/o Bush though, the Lions should have won this game, especially after building a 14-0 lead in the 3rd QTR.

Calvin Johnson is one of my favorite players of all-time.  The combination of tremendous ability, work ethic, class, and character is in essence the ideal player from my perspective. I'm glad to see people like yourself and many others that root for another team greatly appreciate Calvin Johnson.

Quote:Anybody seeing this game?! It probably won't be very high scoring and sloppy but the snow on the field looks to be a couple inches and it keeps on comin.

The best game of the season to watch, because I am bias to any games in the snow or mud.  As a child what kid didnt enjoy playing in the snow or rain, especially football where you can slide and jump with less injury to your body.  It reminded me of my youth and I wanted to get on the field and play in those conditions more than watching the game.  It didnt disapoint as both teams played hard and it was exciting to watch.

I have seen people give Reggie Bush a hard time, saying he hasn't lived up to his draft status, etc.  While that may or not be the case I'm a Reggie Bush fan.  He's got a lot of talent if only he could stay healthy.  I also agree with you that the Lions should have won that game last week.

I'm glad we agree on Calvin Johnson.  He's a future Hall of Famer no doubt about it.
