I think his injury came on a ST play.

Ugh, I hate that. We can't take any more injuries at the position.

I heard Chris Simms this morning. He said the teams Darnold has trouble with are the ones that consistently disguise their coverage. He the said the Jags don’t do that and basically run about three looks all game.   If he is right, we need to break tendency this week.

This is another team we should/ must beat.

Wash tried to do that with his safeties in week one.
We know that outcome.
This was part of what he meant when he said he got "too cute."

We don't have the secondary to pull off much disguise right now IMO.

I think the best thing Wash can do IMO is to dial up pressure with stunts and blitzes.
I'd send extra guys like, Hayden, Jacobs, Jack even put Allen, Yan  or McCray at SAM to blitz a time or two.
Darnold will make mistakes with guys in his face often enough.

I like that idea. Especially with Hayden. Darnold got absolutely clobbered for a forced fumble on MNF with a similar type blitz off the edge and he paid for it when he didn't even bother to peek over there on that particular play. Hayden has been pretty good at it here and there.

In fairness though, about the "too cute" comment. Darnold isn't Mahomes. And Gase isn't Reid. They need to break tendency this week. Sitting back and playing zone and giving this kid any comfort in the pocket is foolish. And if Dareus is out they'll probably want to tee off with a LB or two in order to either deck Darnold or at least stifle Bell in the backfield.

I really DON'T like the idea of Jack blitzing too much on earlier downs unless it's 3rd and a country mile to go. Would rather have Jack literally keep an eye on Bell throughout the entire game. I don't know if Wash has done it yet this year. And if he has I have obviously missed it. But this could be a DAMN good week to actually have Josh Allen drop back into coverage or sneak away from the line in certain situations. He was pretty good in pass coverage at Kentucky.

I would like to see him maybe drop back and roam with Bell on one of those quick out passes in the flats. Because we know that plays coming at some point in this one. Campbell, Ngakoue and even Bryan could be causing early fits for their offensive line. Hopefully they don't get "too cute" like they did in Carolina against McCaffrey with Ngakoue bleeding back into coverage, etc.

Interesting topic. This comment is from the interview with the Jets writer on the Jags homepage: "But as Gase said after the game, people are going to study this tape and they are going to attack much the same way as the Patriots did until they fix it."

It's kind of a big game for Wash. He doesn't have much to gain, but he does have quite a lot to lose. In a game we are expected to win, against an offense and a QB that has just been humilated in primetime, if Wash's defense delivers anything less than a stong performance it will look particularly bad on him.

The biggest knock on Wash has always been his refusal / inability to adapt his defense to the offense he is facing... If the defensive performance were to be anything less than good in this game he will really feel the heat.

I think if I were evaluating staff at year’s end based on what we’ve seen so far, I’d be looking hard at LB coach, OL coach, and DC. They’ve got 9 games to pull it out and I’m hopeful they can. LBs played better last couple of weeks. OL played better than 1 st 4 games. DC’s lack of creativity and that accursed soft zone are concerning.

Darnold didn’t practice today due to an unusual injury:

Quote: Darnold needed to have a toenail removed after someone stepped on his foot during the team’s loss to the Jets on Monday night, which Gase called a “gross” procedure to watch. Darnold was outfitted with a shoe designed to protect the injury, but the Jets’ injury report says he was less active than Gase suggested.

The Jets said Darnold was one of seven players who did not participate in practice. It remains to be seen if that has any impact on the expectation that he’ll play against the Jaguars this weekend.

C.J Mosley with a groin injury also did not practice today. That's a plus for this offense. The Jets have a rookie on the outside. He was being picked on at times from what I saw. But C.J is still a threat at his position. It'll be interesting game. Have to watch Adams at safety for sure. Williams is a problem on the line.

It's not like that team can't sneak up on you.

The in stadium sound and display producer needs to fully capitalize on this ghost thing. I can see some giant Caspers on those giant boards and running on the length of the side strip displays along with some appropriate sound track.

Bouye should be able to bait Darnold into a pick.

The Patriots defense this year is about on par with our 2017 defense if not better. Maybe the closest thing we've seen to the 2000 Ravens defense. We aren't going to shut them down like the Pats did. I like that we're at home the defense usually at least looks average. I question our offense in the trenches against their defense. I could see this being another close nail biter even though the Jets aren't that good. We have questions at linebacker and have some holes on defense unlike NE. Really we need a good game from the offense. Finish drives with more TD's than FG's. Get a lead, control the game. I don't know what to expect from this team. Could look good, could look bad. I'd hope we can stack some wins in the weak part of our schedule.
No pain, no gain.

Somebody should photoshop Darnold's and Gase's face on this. [Image: a141523878110f5c75a7c756be29f160.jpg]

We'll see. New England really hasn't played anybody overpowering on offense this year. They start to see tougher sledding now going into November.

But, all's fair. Good defenses own weak offenses. You can't control your schedule.

Bouye could get a pick off of pressure on Darnold from our defensive front.
I don't think he'll be looking to do much baiting. Anderson is too fast and Crowder is too slippery. Gotta respect their routes and let it come to you IMO.

The appropriate sound track you're looking for here is obviously "Ghostbusters".

Give it a listen.
Play it during warm-ups, loop it 3-4 times.

We played the Jets last season too. We won 31-12, Doug going for the pointless 2 and angering the football gods. Took us to 3-1 and then........well yeah.

Just looking at the stats, Bortles with 388yds passing and 2 TD's, Dede 9catches for 130yds and even Moncrief got 105yds and a TD.

Darnold was 17 of 34 for 176yds and a TD.

At the end of the 3rd Q it was 25-3. I miss those days.

I finally found what I've been looking for. Was trying to figure out which toe of Darnold's has a ghost toenail. It's his left big toe.

Maybe that will help our defense step up and get off on the right foot.
