But I think most people know by now that I'm sincere, even if my views seem ridiculous to them.

It's not bad to be condescending on a message board.  It's pretty much unavoidable if you want to say anything about government or history beyond just your own personal experiences.  If your audience already believes you're an expert on something, they will forgive a lot of condescending language.  If they don't, they'll just tune you out.  And instead of looking at the content of your words to find a reason to question your expertise, they'll just say "he was too condescending."  In real life you can choose your audience and get to know them.  On the internet that's harder.
