Actually, I disagree to backing down.  First, we need a plan to replace the power we buy from Canada. Ontario needs to keep it's power that we buy. We need to do it fast. They have shown during this if they cannot be counted on if we have differences. Reliance on them for our population's needs has to be removed. Doug Ford did us a favor by giving us this wake up call.

PS. Doug Ford has been called to the principle's office to apologize today.

Definitely one policy I strongly disagree with.  Trump is living in some weird fantasy land where he wants heavy industry, shipyards and clouds of fossil fuel smoke cover the horizon.

Tariffs are the reason the Democrats are guaranteed to return to the Oval Office next election.

I wouldn’t go that far. This will be relatively brief posturing for economic control. The tariffs war will be long done by the time the next election comes around.

MAGA are in a rough spot with this one. They either admit they voted for a liar, or admit they voted for an idiot. Worse, the media has given them no talking points on this. It’s just a shame that we didn’t see the usual suspects attempt some deflections. If there ever was a time for “but Biden!” this thread is it.

You're broken and it's only going to get worse for you..

And we'll be here every step of the way, pointing and laughing at you, all while you and your ideals work your way into nonexistence.

Just acknowledge that..

Just to lighten the mood a little.......

We are in trouble.
Ireland is imposing a 125% tariff on imported US goods until we take Rosie O'Donnell back.

As a result of the Canadian tariffs a US based Aluminum producer, Century Aluminum has announced the building of a new smelter. It will create over 1,000 high paying manufacturing jobs. The wages and benefits are about $140,000 per employee. These are the jobs we will see coming back....

The time to do something that you feel is right or necessary and that may also be perceived as "unpopular" by the electorate is immediately after taking office which is why this is happening now versus next year or beyond. The pressure will grow on resolving these things as we get closer to the end of the year with the mid-terms coming up next year. The markets will need to be growing again by that time or the Republicans will be in trouble and the idea of Trump governing effectively and advancing an agenda beyond year 2 will be a pipe dream.

I do like the idea of manufacturing coming back home to some extent from a national security point of view or even just further diversifying production away from China to other countries. I don't like China being able to wield so much sway over us in that regard. However, mature economies like the U.S. often shift more toward service and away from manufacturing and we will still be a predominantly service oriented economy regardless of how much manufacturing comes back home.

For sure. It's just a matter of time before the Democrats get their messaging on course, and no doubt they will use any faux pas to their advantage. The MSM is just chomping at the bit for an injurious scandal to exploit. Without the luxury of the mainstream advocacy ecosystem the left enjoys, Republicans have to hit every mark.

As you say: Ultimately, agenda success pivots on the economy.

Ontario just pooped in their mess kit, with the electricity threat. We are firing up perfectly fine power plants that were shut down. This will eliminate the need to purchase that power from Ontario. All I can say to that Ford guy in Ontario...smooth move Mr Exlax...

-----Discliamer---- This is an opinion.
As April 2nd approaches and reciprocal tariffs loom more countries are coming to the US and negotiating. I am guessing they have now run the numbers and are beginning to figure it out. Imports are only 12%+/- of our current GNP. Autos make up 40% of that leaving only 6.2% for everything else. They will begin lowering their tariffs. They will just lose market share as consumers will buy autos less effected by the tariffs. Every unit they lose increases the fixed cost per unit on their margins. The numbers will not lie. Many already produce and have multiple plants in the US Honda, Mercedes, BMW (look at South Carolina), Toyota ... the list goes on. Why do they import from the EU then? Well, because first thing that happens is they get a vax tax credit for every vehicle. (some call this a subsidy)

President Donald J. Trump announced today that the United States of America will be putting what is known as a Secondary Tariff on the Country of Venezuela, for numerous reasons, including the fact that Venezuela has purposefully and deceitfully sent to the United States, undercover, tens of thousands of high level, and other, criminals, many of whom are murderers and people of a very violent nature. Among the gangs they sent to the United States, is Tren de Aragua, which has been given the designation of “Foreign Terrorist Organization.” We are in the process of returning them to Venezuela — It is a big task! In addition, Venezuela has been very hostile to the United States and the Freedoms which we espouse. Therefore, any Country that purchases Oil and/or Gas from Venezuela will be forced to pay a Tariff of 25% to the United States on any Trade they do with our Country. All documentation will be signed and registered, and the Tariff will take place on April 2nd, 2025, LIBERATION DAY IN AMERICA. Please let this notification serve to represent that the Department of Homeland Security, Border Patrol, and all other Law Enforcement Agencies within our Country have been so notified. Thank you for your attention to this matter!

Tren de Aragua is basically a Venezuelan goon squad used by Maduro to stay in power.  It is in fact an invasion.

The whole complex tariff calculation was just:

Trade deficit to country X divided by imports from country X.

No assessment of tariff rates and non-tariff barriers. Economic buffoons are running / ruining the country.

Still digesting all this. Looking to read a bit of the small book he flashed to get better insight to the method. It is amazing the amount of tariffs charged on US good by other countries. (with a 10% floor) The solution for them appears to be simple. Reduce theirs and ours come down. It does appear on the surface we were the only country embracing free trade. Of course nothing is that simple...gonna get interesting.
