The Backup QB's...

#61

The Backups have been beyond bad but there isn't anything we can do about it this season.  Next season they should go after Chase Daniels or someone like that.

Quote:Whatever chance there is, the chance for Henne to not lose the game is greater. Also, Henne is not making that much. This is starting to be creepier than fixation with grant.

This doesn't even make sense. It's been a few years since Henne has had any kind of success on the field, and since then it appears he's regressed considerably. Henne's check down mentality makes for a horrible fit with Oley's deep passing offense, and he's now throwing INTs despite primarily throwing short. You're suggesting that there's a reasonable chance for Henne to come into a game and not lose it, but that's wishful thinking. The chances of that happening are incredibly slim.

As for Henne's contract, I'm curious as to what you think it "not much" for a backup QB. His cap hit this year is $4.75 mil. Unfortunately the money is guaranteed so there is no savings if he's cut, but as I've been saying, his very presence takes up a valuable roster spot and is holding the team back.

Henne had a bad last game, but he's been said to have had a good camp this season.

If the sky were truly falling with Henne, he'd already be gone.

Im saying the chances are better than throwing a 6th round rookie out there in the middle of the season. This is not a glowing endorsement of Henne just an acceptance of reality. We both know what it would take for them to eat his salary, barring that he'll be here.

What a ridiculous statement.  A backup QB is 'holding the team back'.

Quote:You'll notice we are both working off of "ifs". I'm giving you worst case scenario and you are giving me best case scenario. For what it's worth, I like Allen and think he will develop into a good backup. If football is indeed football, you wouldn't be worried about Henne having to take over if Blake gets injured. On having to wait...you only have to wait the rest of this season, soooo not a lifetime. You'll pass???? Nah, you'll be just fine with whatever the front office decides.

I definitely would be worried, watching Henne.. But u right this will be the last.. I just hope its not the most important. And we not in a bad spot.

Yes. I think they like him as much as a mentor for Blake as anything else. He's not holding them back, he's probably helped Blakes development.

The sky been falling for 3 years under Gus.. Lol Henne still here..I think they only like Henne for a veteran presence for Bortles. Thats it..

A capable backup is important. I don't understand the mindset of some who say, "well at least we have a starter". Well we better have a capable backup if the starter goes down because if the season goes into the tank because of one injury then the team wasn't staffed appropriately.

With Henne, our running game needs to be superb. Hand off and let the RB's advance the ball. Keep the Pick 6's off the board.

Many seem to forget that preseason games are pretty much "practice live".  It's just practice.  They probably aren't even looking at him when the cuts start happening.

That's because Blake is the linchpin. You guys want an up and coming starter and world beater for back up? Why stop there? How bout a 2000 yard rusher?

Welcome to the NFL.

If you have two starters, then you have no starter.

Everyone hating the backup, is a sign your starter is really good.

Everyone loving the backup, is a sign you're really bad at the QB position top to bottom.

We have faced all of these situations within the last 10 years. I'm happy to hate the back up.

Funny watching Dak Prescott of the Cowboys, play against the Dolphins.. He looks good... The backup doesnt have to be hated... I remember we had Leftwich, Garrard, and Gray... All capable of playing... None of them was hated...It was a comfortable feeling to have, and know that it didnt matter if Leftwich went down we had Garrard ... Thats the point im trying to make..

Sure there's a few teams that may have solid backups, but most teams are similar to us. Look at the Cowboys last year. Their backups couldn't do anything. It's not really about making excuses, it's mostly the fact that in order to get a solid backup it usually requires the use of an early draft pick (top 3 rounds) and we couldn't afford using that kind of resource when we had so many holes for our starters. There's occasionally people that come available in free agency, but the good ones always seek to become starters.

I believe we could have use a fourth ... Did we really need another DT more then a backup Qb?? We already had Jackson, Marks, Bennett, Miller, Jones, Alualu etc...

As good as Sheldon day has looked I think the answer is yes we did need him. Marks is somewhat of a question mark and Bennett didn't show much last year. It's really nit-picking at this point though. Who did you want us to draft in the fourth that would've been a likely solid backup? Dak was already gone by our 4th round pick.

Is his contract fully guaranteed next year? Because I could see us drafting a guy in the 4th round and riding with him
