Henne Agrees to Deal

#61

Quote:Yes, some have stretched a bit and called him one of the best back-ups  -  but I don't see much point in actually ranking back ups.

There are two kinds of backups. Starters that happen to be behind another starter (think Kurt Warner behind Trent Green before his injury in 1999) and guys that are hopelessly losers.

Henne falls into the second part of the category. If the team can carry him without him ever having to actively make a play beyond throwing at wide open guys then there can be some wins, but no matter how much talent you surround him with, he'll never be good enough to actually help the team. It would have to be the team helping him.

Right. Thanks for the info on your invented categories.

How many of those Kurt Warners are there out there to sign right now?

Or are we supposed to groom one? Because that's what I suggested.

I don't know that there are any. Generally the only way to get one is to be the first team to get its hands on them, because teams aren't stupid, and won't let a legit starter walk in free agency. To be clear, I agree with you, ranking backups is pointless. If they were starter quality they'd either be displacing the guy ahead of them like Brady did to Bledsoe, or they'd be getting traded since teams won't just let a starting quality guy walk.

Besides all of that, when a starter does manage to make it to free agency due to some kind of circumstance they won't be interested in backing up anyone anyway. So, while it's possible the Jaguars could get their hands on a starter for their backup at some point, they won't find one willing to sign in free agency.

I don't like the signing of Henne because I see it as wasting money, but I don't believe there would be a "better" prospect to be had in free agency, just possibly a more reasonably priced one.

Quote:Question, what did he do to get another contract???

Some thinks hes above average backup qb, in what aspect? He doesnt win!

Simply put he was resigned basically because of his relationship with Bortles, will he win games if needed? No! Will he make Bortles better?? No!

Smh Caldwell ..

You have to remember that Henne's value to the team is OFF the field.

We have all seen what Henne is on the field (and for those of you who have forgotten, lucky you), but none of us have seen what Henne is off the field, in the film room, in the QB meetings and all the other stuff that the QBs do behind the scenes.

Does Henne, as a veteran QB, get any credit for BB5s big Jags record-breaking numbers from last season or would BB5 have had that same year with any other veteran QB not named Henne on the team?

Plus, there is always that small chance that if Henne actually does have to play, that the above average and actually looks like an NFL QB Henne could make an appearance instead of the Henne that we all picture when we hear his name mentioned, especially now that we actually have play-making WRs.

I survived the Gus Bradley Error.

Oops! Someone with a lick of sense has chimed in and put every last argument of the naysayers to shame.

Not that it was that hard to begin with, but he understands that none of us as fans have a clue of his value because it is only apparent behind the scenes.

It is fun to read the nonsense from people that think they know but really don't.

What lies behind us, and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us.

So we signed Henne to be a coach/cheerleader. Maybe he will have a page on the ROAR calendar.

Henne is the backup and if you go around the league he is more than adequate as the backup. That is what you want out of your backup, adequate. Anyone better would be seeking starter money from another team.

Thanks for proving my point so eloquently. You couldn't have done a better job if you tried.

It's a back up QB.

Who cares!?!

When they re-sign Lewis feel free to copy and edit this post and replace TE with QB.

He's given millions, plus stability for his family, to do practically nothing. The man is on fire.

My take on the Jaguars re-signing Chad Henne is Dave Caldwell believes Henne will be a bridge for the team's future # 2 QB.  Much like Henne was a bridge for Blake Bortles as the team's # 1 QB.   In the meanwhile,  Henne provides the value of also continuing to be a sounding board for Bortles and the coaches.  Not to mention the professionalism and leadership Henne brings to the Jags locker room.

Either in 2016 or 2017,  I believe the Jags are going to draft a QB in the middle or late rounds who Caldwell views as the team's eventual # 2 QB.   With the most likely outcome the QB being on the 53 man roster,  even though the plan will be to keep him inactive for every regular season game as a rookie ( barring an injury to Bortles or Henne  ).

To be fair to Henne, he's never really played with a good supporting cast which we seem to now be assembling. Hopefully he'll get many opportunities this year exclusively in situations where Bortles is pulled from the game up 3 scores late in the 4th.

Lol how are people seeing this as at all negative?

We need a back up for Blake,

Chad knows the system,

Has worked well with Blake for 2 years

Is on par with other back ups in the league

Isnt being paid much

Who are people wanting as our back up? Tom Brady? Seriously....

Bortles had a franchise record breaking season and credits Henne with aiding in his development, yet many [BLEEP] that he was resigned at a very reasonable deal. I guess we should ignore the franchise QB and wait for Weeden, Vick...hell maybe Matt Moore...he has done wonders for Tannehill.
