There will be competition at LT.  Joeckel isn't a lock to be the starter. 

 

Wiz is a free agent, and while it looked early on like he might secure an extension, some of the mistakes he made during the course of the season eliminated that as a possibility unless he's willing to play for peanuts as a depth guy.  I don't see that happening.

 

So, it makes sense that Caldwell didn't mention either of them in his discussions about the line.  He's sending a message.  Some of the cap space we're swimming in will be used to help fortify that offensive line.

The only vet really worth a damn out there right now is Cordy Glenn. There's Okung too, but he's not that great and has an injury history.

 

 

PFF also lists Kelvin Beachum and Donald Penn among it's top six offensive free agents this offseason.

Makes me wonder if he means move one of them over and make a play for Kelechi Osemele. A line with Osemele/Cann/Linder/Parnell is pretty nasty.

I don't think Alex Mack is worth a 40 something million dollar contract either but it's the money he'll get. For the future of this franchise I would rather stop-gap LG with Beadles another year while they groom his replacement.

 

If Cann impressed Caldwell more than any rookie he's seen then we could have an even better center on our roster already. He has the size and experience already.

I don't see any scenario wihere Beadles is on the Jags roster next year, let alone a starter. Our starting guards next season will be Cann, and Linder, with Jeremy Parnell at RT. I expect to see upgrades/competition at LT & C.

I think it's reasonable and even possible. I think you're technically still using the best four lineman on the team with that line-up plus getting better with Glenn if he's signed. I think we should try to exhaust all possibilities with LJ at RT before giving up on a former third overall selection. If he can't hack it at RT then he doesn't deserve to be a starter in the NFL. That simple.

This staff is still really really high on Tyler Shatley too. I wouldn't be shocked if he's our center day 1.

Did you watch the press conference or just read the quote?  I saw the press conference and didn't get that impression at all.  First, Caldwell tends to give very non-committal politician answers to questions.  He's not going to promise things or guarantee anything on any topic.  Second, it's not all he said.  He also said that you can't judge a player by one game and that if we had this press conference a couple of weeks ago, no one would even be asking about Joeckel.  I took his press conference as a pretty big endorsement that Joeckel will be coming back.

 

I think many people on here are going to be very disappointed with the off-season in regards to Joeckel.  I seriously doubt that Joeckel gets any serious competition.  First, the team has bigger needs.  Second, even if an argument can be made to upgrade tackle over other positions, Caldwell isn't going to want to admit to wasting a second overall pick on him.  The best you can hope for is maybe a third round draft pick.  Caldwell can argue that the pick is only be selected for "depth".  If the third rounder beats out Joeckel, at least Caldwell can claim that the the third rounder is a steal.  He can at least save face by replacing Joeckel with his smart draft pick.  I think that people who believe that we will go after a top tier free agent tackle or use an early rounder on one are completely mistaken. 

 

As for center, I like Alex Mack.  He's the best of those who will likely be available.  If not, I don't know.  I would probably re-sign Wiz as a stop gap and maybe draft a future replacement.

Caldwell keeps mentioning Cann's ability to snap. If I were a betting man I would bet that they let Wiz walk, let Beadles go, slide Cann over to center, and move Shatley over to LG. They'll probably draft a tackle later in the draft for depth/competition and let Bowanko and Cann battle it out for the starting position at center with the loser becoming the swing C/G.

Either way, the Jags need to come up with a better game-plan for handling the superior pass rushers , especially the best one in the league. Bradley needs to take over there and most of all Marrone is responsible for that scheme and get some double teams at minimum plain and simple. I feel like the jags have had the same game plan in every game against Houston since 2013

DC has not come out and said... This guy is our franchise LT.

If Joker struggles, in TC or next season, he's toast. But I'm betting he comes out in 2016 with Cann next to him and plays pretty well.

He'll get extended.
