Honestly?  Yes... and that's a good thing, because I like Robinson as well.  Yeldon's vision is fantastic and the guy is just so damned slippery.

 

I was a bit skeptical when they drafted him, but the more I've seen the more I like the idea of Yeldon/Robinson going forward and releasing Toby/Pierce at the end of this season.

Okay this needs to stop. Other than when he was old or injured when did Taylor or MJD average under 4 YPC? The answer is never. Yeldon is not a Fred Taylor, sure he stops and cuts, but he is nowhere near as good. He is an average at best back right now, and I don't think his ceiling is really anywhere near HOF level like Fred. I mean we have had some bad years for the running game, but that doesn't make Yeldon a stud. People need to stop overrating him.

Stewart wasn't a bad back at all.

 

Means really didn't do much other than that playoff stretch in 1996.  Granted he was awesome during that stretch, but other than that, meh.

As Bortles continues to improve and start to scare defenses, the run game will come together. If you watch the games, Yeldon looks like the best bet to be able to lead the group moving forward. If you go back and watch Le'Veon Bell in his rookie season, you can see some similar struggles to what Yeldon is going through. Pittsburgh just had better offensive line play which helped him mask it a bit. Bell still only averaged 3.5 ypc that year and he had been playing RB all his life too. Now that he has dropped so much weight, Bell actually is built similarly to Yeldon. I'm not saying Yeldon is going to be Bell, but when I was evaluating both players, Yeldon had some similarities to Bell. Both had size, but it didn't necessarily translate to power. Their vision, fluidity, and pass catching ability is actually quite similar as well. Just saying.. give the man some time here. Not every RB can be Adrian Peterson or Todd Gurley and immediately take the league by storm.

Yeah I know it's kind of irrelevant given that Robinson is hurt but comparing the two backs given their respective circumstances as starters it just seems Yeldon was given the starter role on default due his draft selection.


Denard Robinson was a 5th round pick, QB converted to a RB. So I'm giving him a pass on his 2013 rookie season as he never played the position. But in 2014, he had 135 attempts for 582 yds, 4.3 average, 4 TDs and a long of 40 in 9 starts. He had a nice little stretch in the season where he was averaging 90+ yds a game until he got hurt.


TJ Yeldon was a 2nd round pick. He has a little over half the number of attempts of Denard in 2014, with 81 attempts for 291 yds. His average is 3.6 ypa with a long of 36. 0 TDs in 6 starts.


I know it's early but I don't see anything that indicates Yeldon will be the long term answer at RB. I also know we've also had line issues this year but one could argue they were worst last year and we didn't have much of a passing game. I want to like Yeldon but in his time here I haven't seen much that would indicate he was worthy of a 2nd round selection.


I hope they address this position again but we are talking about Dave Caldwell, the same guy that actually kept a roster spot for Toby Gerhart.


I know Some will disagree, that's okay but I personally don't enjoy mediocrity.

I think Yeldon is definitely better. Has Robinson gotten the amount of touches that Yeldon has? No... but can you honestly sit here and tell me that if Denard Robinson was an EVERY down back like Yeldon that he'd have the same production? He'd be murdered by now. Come on...

A Yeldon/Robinson mix of around 70/30 should be quite effective IMO. That seemed to be the coaches intention before it got derailed by injury.

Denard was just just beginning to show his versatility as a check down target also - even lining up at WR. Not having him out there in that role and as a COP back has hampered the offense's potential.

He is absolutely a weapon this offense needs on the field to help give it that big play ability. 

 

Yeldon makes sense as the feature back in this offense.  He doesn't have that break away speed like Fred had, but he's got the ability to make something out of nothing, even when the line is allowing defenders to get hands on him a yard deep in the backfield.  He has great field vision most of the time, and has an elusiveness that makes him someone who you want out there. 

 

Robinson has that dynamic that makes him a great change of pace back.  He's fun to watch, and when he gets the ball in the open field, he has the potential to always make something happen.

I like them both.  Yeldon obviously is a top-flight talent, he reminds me a lot of James Stewart from back in the day.  Robinson is pretty nifty too though, I thought as a converted-QB he'd try to rely on his speed but he's done some power running too.  If he could stay on the field, together they'd be a great one-two punch.

I cringe everytime Shoelace takes an open field hit from a LB, or is stood up at the line and someone is coming to finish him off.  I love his production and feel he should be the 2 in our 1-2 punch but let TJ be the bull.  He can use his quick steps to get the tough yards and make it look easy.  Denard can always come in and keep the defense stagnant with outside hand-offs and sweeps. 

 

I know we shouldn't experiment too much with trick plays, but i think adding a play or two every other game with Denard throwing from the backfield will keep the defense on its toes.  Heck, even running the speed option is a choice but i just don't know if im ready to play with Bortles' health like that with "The Hennster" waiting on the sideline.
