He was undrafted only because the number of receivers available in that draft was unusually high. He was projected to go somewhere between the 4th and 7th round, depending on which draft pundit's opinion you value most.

And a 4th pick ceiling is a very good expectation of how he should pan out

At the very least try Lee as a Kick Returner before getting rid of him.

Watching him at USC, he was outstanding returning kicks.

I love how this thread has progressed from "if you had no choice but to cut either Lee or Hurns, who would you cut?", to "let's find reasons to keep Marqise Lee around for another year."

I wouldn't go that far.

 

Hurns was able to play on instinct...play without thinking and without hesitation...at least a lot less than the other guys because he already knew the offense.  He knew the terminology, etc.  He only had to adjust in the physical differences between college and pro level CBs, and the college level and pro level defenses/coverages.

 

If he struggles to learn the offense (where the other two rookies did last year), that isn't necessarily a poor reflection on Olson.

 

What if Olson gets more production out of Lee and Robinson?

 

What if there is more production from the QB, RB and TE position?

 

If Hurns is the only player that has a drop off, and every other position on offense is improved, then why should the OC have to go?

 

I have my concerns with Olson.  But I won't automatically say that if Hurns struggles to learn the offense, that and that alone is sufficient cause for Olson to be canned.

 

I am still scratching my head at the Olson hire as the new OC, because it reminds me of Mularkey as the Jaguars HC which was far worse of an idea of course.

At least the ast. HC might step in if Olson fails at OC, but I'm remaining positive that he'll be far more productive than the last few seasons have been at Offense.

I mean its hard not to with an improved Offensive Line, receiving threats like our TE, and having an actual productive run game.

I figure it will be a sort of Jumbo Heavy Run set of schemes, shove the ball down their throat and most of the passes will be play action roll outs.

Blackmon would have had better rookie stats with Bortles as QB.

 

Blackmon came in with limited time because of his issues, had a terrible QB combination, and a horrible staff with which to work.

 

And still put up better numbers.

 

I'm not saying Hurns is the pits.... but to compare him and Blackmon is borderline we todd did

Sounds like what they said about 5th round pick Jarret Dillard a few years ago. Was going to be a star based on his college records and elite jumping ability. So much for that.

I admit I was sold on Dillard coming into his rookie year.  He did have a good college pedigree (albeit from Rice IIRC) elite jumping ability and nice change of direction.  

 

The difference between Hurns and Dillard is Hurns got drafted in the year of the wide receiver.  Even the most critical of that year would call that year top 3 all time for receivers.  Absolutely loaded in talent.  In any other year Hurns would have been drafted in the 4th.

Year of the wide receiver shouldn't matter. He would have still pushed out a lesser player at another position for the draft spot.

 

The reality is that drafters thought he would be a long shot to contribute.

My biggest issues with Dillard from the start were that he was small, slow, and over-aged. I didn't buy the talk of Dillard as an eventual starter for one second, but since he was just a fifth-round pick, I figured that a couple years as the fourth receiver would more than compensate for the value invested in him. No such thing as a bust after the fourth round.

Hell, Jermaine Kearse wasn't drafted and all he does is make big plays. Maybe not a #1 but always there when you need a big play.

Hurns also benefited from a depleted WR core, Knowing the system front and back, No respect from opposing teams' DC's and DBs thus open lanes, and once some of those evaporated, He became invisible as the season wore on.

 

With a new system, I doubt he matches his rookie year. He is talented enough to deserve a roster spot though. A good #4 option that can be relied on to not screw up off the field and work hard. Hes exactly what we need in a backup WR.

I still think about this lol.  Im sure you probably still think Hurns is a number 4 WR but I still disagree.  I wish we could have 4 #4 WR like that
