Deflate Gate - the report is in

(This post was last modified: 05-07-2015, 10:14 PM by Byron LeftTown.)

"According to a letter dated November 2, 2004, from then-NFL Director of Game Operations Peter Hadhazy and a memorandum dated October 25, 2004, from Richard Farley, the NFL Security Representative assigned to New England, that incident involved Patriots ball boys relaying supposed “approved” game balls that actually were non-approved practice balls to a game official during an October 25, 2004 regular season game."

"The then-Equipment Manager of the Patriots described the incident as “just an honest mistake.” The Hadhazy letter stated, however, that “the Patriots have not provided a reasonable explanation for this incident,” and warned that disciplinary action against the Patriots could result if a similar incident occurred in the future because it could be interpreted as a competitive violation."

So the Patriots tried to sneak doctored practice balls into games in 2004 when it was clearly against the rules, then in 2006 Tom Brady lobbied to have the rules changed to make team practice balls the standard game balls.  For the Patriots, the new rule change immediately resulted in an NFL record 50 TD passe and an NFL-record 16-0 regular season record.  It is likely sheer coincidence that these historic numbers occurred just after an already talented coach and QB got a rule change that facilitated a systemic program of doctoring balls for a statistically formidable turnover advantage.

When you look at the essence of what was done - a relatively small change in the pressure of the football, and the huge statistical change in turnovers and therefore the outcome of games - it's pretty incredible.  Belichick and Brady may have won 30, 40, 50 games over the years that they would not have otherwise won.

How many division titles did they steal?  In how many playoff games did they cheat their way to victory?  We will never know, because the closer the reporter is to the NFL, the less interested he is in knowing the truth.  You can see that illustrated clearly on this board, where the bootlickers deriding the initial reports as sour grapes are not present when the facts come out.

I don't buy it.

The footballs were slightly under spec at halftime. Much of that can be attributed to PV = nRT, the pressure decreases when the temperature decreases. There is also a condensation effect that further decreases the pressure if the balls were inflated with humid air. The Indy balls were also under spec (one of four at exactly the lower limit), less than the Pats balls, but they apparently started out at pressures above the minimum.

If Brady were 100% honest, he could still ask for the balls to be pressurized to exactly 12.5 psi, and not over, which is legal. That explains the difference between the pressures. That would also fit the E-mail discussion between the two equipment guys.

None of this explain why the ball guy took them into the restroom, or why they weren't available for Walt Anderson. Funny though that Anderson didn't have the pressures checked after being told the pressures might be a problem and then adding in the missing ball mystery. Maybe he wanted the Pats to keep their advantage.

The outrage over this is hilarious. The guy gets balls at 16 so he makes his ball boys keep them low, possibly even under regulation. Guys are talking like they would have been a bunch of 0-16 bums without a few psi. One dude going nuts over the 04 rule change, how many super bowls did they already have then, 2 or 3? [BAD WORD REMOVED], they were winning SBs more often before the rule change, the league better watch out if they aren't allowed to "doctor" the balls anymore they might get back to winning 3/4 instead of 1 every 4 or 5, lol. The amount of jealousy is incredible, what a joke.

No way, the pats win more so they must be cheating. End of story. No one else ever cheats though, just the pats.

It comes off as jealousy when everyone's taking it so far out of perspective. Why the Tom Brady hate? Why are you ignoring the 3/4 Colts balls that were deflated? Why are you ignoring Aaron Rodgers who said all quarterbacks do [BLEEP] like this? Why are you ignoring all of the ex players who have said it's not a big deal?

The answer is you're a hater. And that stems from him winning all the time, aka jealousy.

Who is giving anyone else a pass? Just because this thread is about the Patriots and that's what is being discussed doesn't mean anyone else is getting a pass. Cheating is cheating and a lot of people don't care if everyone is doing it. If it makes you feel better to call me a jealous hater because you apparently think it's okay to cheat, that is your issue, not mine.

But how do you explain Brady's behavior after the investigation was begun?   The flurry of communications between him and the ball boys, the giving of autographed merchandise to the ball boys, the refusal to turn over his cell phone?   It sure smells like a cover up.  Personally, I don't think the deflated balls had much to do with winning.   But impeding an investigation like he appears to have done is what deserves punishment.   Martha Stewart didn't get punished for insider trading, she got punished for lying to the FBI.   Same with Bill Clinton and Richard Nixon.   Clinton was impeached for perjury.   Nixon was impeached not for the Watergate burglary, but for the cover up.

Personally, I like and admire Tom Brady for being a dorky 6th round draft pick who became a slam dunk first ballot Hall of Famer who married a Supermodel.   Sure.   But still, he has to be punished for this.  Anything less would smack of star treatment and/or Goodell being in the pocket of his good friend, Bob Kraft.  They suspend people for smoking pot, how can you not suspend people for something that goes to the integrity of the game and the integrity of the investigation?

This doesn't surprise me a bit. There's a reason you don't get a whole lot out of Brady and Belichick when they speak to the media. They give even less then the majority of other players/coaches. The less they have said, the more likely they don't get caught. But try to skirt things long enough and that will come to light.

The 6 year span following the time he spoke to the rules committee regarding teams having a little more game day control of balls prove that the deflated balls were a huge help. They improved in key categories over that time.

Pretty good article on "deflate gate". The writer is probably correct, the final write up not as harsh as it should have and could have been.

The problem with that is, people have done the math, and the balls would have had to be inflated around 120+ degrees for the outdoor temperature to change them that much. I remember Neil DeGrasse Tyson posted his math somewhere

You should get counseling. Did Brady sleep with your girlfriend or something?

Tom Brady paid with autographed merch.

In an AFC Championship game.

It isn't even about whether it gave them a competitive advantage, or if both teams had one... It's about the constant bending and breaking of the rules by a particular organization in the last 10+ years.

It isn't jealousy. If it was this clear cut with the Packers or the frickin Browns, I'd want guys to be punished.

Brady clearly had something to hide, didn't cooperate with the investigation, which falls under the conduct policy.

Guys are getting suspended for half a season or more for smoking pot. This guy is a smug rich [BLEEP] cheater, suspend him for every game except the Jags game, I don't care, it isn't homerism. I want to see the dude put in his place. The whole organization reeks of smug "I'm untouchable" attitudes.

And it seeps into guys like Willie on the networks shows.

No, but I was a huge Patriots fan for several decades.  I'm talking Steve Grogan, John Hannah, Sam Bam Cunningham days.  It's sad to see how far that franchise has fallen under Kraft, Belichick, and Brady, and I mean that sincerely.  It's all tainted.  They aren't winners but the worst kind of losers.
