Travon Walker: 2nd Year Thoughts Etc (merged)

Walker is fine. This is how most NFL pass rushers operate in the NFL. A bit of a lull, a lull and then BOOM, big day. It's normal. For me, when I watch his game closely, I would just like to see more efforts cutting back inside Vs. windmilling around outside.

I expect him to come back to the states with 10 sacks on the year. That's me expecting 2.5 sacks in each contest over there in London. Which is doable since he's fixing to face off against two rookie QB's. Time to feast. Time to dominate. Time to establish yourself as a household name.

You're specifically talking about shotgun/passing plays where the QB is take 5 or 7 step back, right?  I agree with that.  The one play that I think many critics of Walker subliminally thing about from this year is that one play against the Bills where he was clearly being held and Walker threw up his arms to telegraph the hold, and it wasn't called, which I think resulted in a TD.

But that's not Walker's modus operandi.  He was just blatantly being held and the officials ignored it.

Also, Walker has been getting pressures all year.  He's strong and he has a motor that won't quit.  There is rarely plays where I don't see 44 converging on the play.  I appreciate his hustle.  He has the potential to be 1st Team All-Pro.  I really like how he's developed from his rookie season.

His rookie year he made stupid penalties.  He was out of place, and he was completely out of his element.

His 2nd year, he had flashes of great plays, but he still was not able to beat single blocking.

In his 3rd year, he's getting doubled up on occasion, and yet he still pressures the QB.  What's even better?  He still has passion to chase the runner.  He has a motor, man.  He has no quit.  He'll set the edge and then he'll come back and make the tackle if the back side tackle whiffed.

Walker is the man.

He was getting doubled plenty last season. In fact he got doubled more than JHA did which is what helped JHA have the year he did.

Just in general. Shortest distance from point A to point B is a straight line. Would rather see him use more of his power with a spin or rip inside Vs. trying to bull his blocker back while rounding outside.

I feel like that will be his natural next level of progression. When he starts tapping into that move and getting a feel for it he'll be a [BLEEP] monster.

Watch the strip sack closely here and follow his right arm

Our guy is developing a rip move

Big punch from his left arm stands the OT up and unsquares him - right arm comes under with a rip to help him get by

Rushing the passer jags style, collapse the pocket and then give up 10+ yards on 3rd down when the qb decides to run

This is very clean. Two things he did here that's impressive.

1. He didn't let the tackle get his hands on him until it was too late.

2. Watch his left hand. He jabs him up, grips his right shoulder pad a little bit and actually pulls him down so he can free his left arm for the strip.

Good [BLEEP].

He is improving quite a bit as a pass rusher.

And not mentioned enough but widely known around the league is just how disruptive he is against the run… no TE can block him .. and it is very difficult to move him. Constantly sheds blocks and creates impact in the run game.

Combine this with his motor and improvement as a pass rusher and we are sitting in a good spot with Trevon.

If only we could get some type of impact on the interior and with Armstead we would have one heck of a pass rush.

Something else that shouldn't go unsaid. How often has this team played with a substantial lead this season? It's rare they have the lead to put our opponents in obvious passing situations.

They brought in interior guys, they're just young and need to grow up. It might not be this year, but I think the material is there for a dynamic front 4.

While that's true, it can also be said that we need more out of Hamilton and Armstead. Based on how Baalke's draft class from last year has stepped up this year, you're probably right. Expect more out of Smith and Jefferson next year.

That’s fair . I have high hopes for Smith and Jefferson… especially Smith. And I fully expect him to progress especially towards later part of this year with repetitions and with a full offseason with this team next year…

I just really hope for this year we can somehow find a way to generate some more interior rush.

I’m still hopeful that this team can make a run this year. So hopefully some of the vets.. especially Armstead can start to raise their level play.

Smith looked great in the preseason. So more development and I think he'll be quite good. Didn't notice as much with Jefferson but smith is a big human with good twitch.

Him Walker and hines-allen seem quite formidable.

Balke sure seems to be hitting well here. 4 game losing aside to start the season most of his players seem to be quality.

Whether he built in the right direction is up for debate but the players he got aren't bad it seems.

At this point it will depend on Neilsen self scouting and starting to play more games on the line (twists, stunts, loops), and/or Maason Smith getting over the rookie struggles and starting to get playing time and flash on the field.

He's putting it all together.  He's just done the Quarter Blood Technique.

Still needs more flexibilty.  But he's a karate man.  He's gonna get there.

I've been a fan of Walker this whole thread.  And I continue to be.  Even when some folks here were down on the pick....  It ain't cool being no jive turkey so close to Thanksgiving.

With all that said, Flacco is a sitting duck back there.  What's important is that Walker can get better at containing the edge on mobile QBs.

Ben Solak of ESPN thinks it would be a win/win for the Jags to trade Travon to the loins for a couple of 4th rounders.  @JaguarsOnSI apparently can't get the title of the article right as there is no mention of the Jags trading for any lions player that I can find.  Fails all around. Ben's take and the writer of this follow up article on @JaguarsOnSI are so bad that they have to be AI created.
