It's not like Bortles came in and set the world on fire with the same supporting cast. Aaron Rodgers would have struggled behind the line we rolled out there last year. Jeff Tuel would have been a greasy stain on the field by the end of his fourth drive. The guy couldn't stick behind the all-world quarterback room of E.J. Manuel, Matt Cassel and Tyrod Taylor. Consider that when anointing him the obvious replacement for Henne.

It's nearly the dead zone. Claiming Jeff Tuel would've been glanced over the paper 15 years ago. Now, it's been discussed and debated on this message board. No wonder the NFL as a business has never been this strong, the interest is crazy.

Eh, I think people are a bit too hard on Henne.  If he were the starter, I could understand it.  But as a backup, he's got the experience to step in if necessary.  There's been games he's been god awful in, but that's bound to happen.  The only time we should worry about our backup is when we're up by 28 late in the fourth or if god forbid Bortles gets hurt.

 

Henne needs to go.  I'd rather go with Banger.  We need to look for someone in case Bortles doesn't work out, or gets hurt.  again.  And, Henne doesn't exactly inspire as a 'mentor' either.  The fact that he is still here really is troubling.  We can't know that we definitely have 'the' guy, and we better keep looking until it is absolutely obvious.

Bortles didn't struggle as a rookie?

 

Bortles played better when he first came in because he's a more talented and athletic QB than Henne could ever dream of being.  That doesn't trickle down and mean that EVERY QB is better than Henne.  Tuel went undrafted for a reason.  There's also a reason he's not on the Bills roster any longer.  If he winds up sticking around, it's  not because he beat Henne out.  It's because he was more competent than Morris, and even that's not a given at this point.

Gabbert was named the starter to begin the season.  Henne replaced him when Blaine was injured.  Blaine didn't end the season as the starter, and he was healthy.  Last time I checked, that's a pretty good indication Henne won the job because he outperformed Gabbert.  Not sure what you were watching.  Gabbert may have begun that season the starter, but he lost the job.  Twist it any way you need to in order to continue this agenda of yours to portray Henne as the most incompetent QB in the league.  He's not.  But you keep telling yourself otherwise if it makes you feel better.

Agreed.  One there was film on him to identify tendencies, defenses started to adjust and game plan for him.  Add to that the fact that he did hit a wall as a rookie, as expected.  He was able to get back on track late in the season, but by that point it was a matter of just getting through the rookie year so that he could continue to work on improving as a QB.  He got great experience as a result, and has a better understanding of what it takes to be an effective QB in the NFL.  Hopefully, all that experience coupled with his off season efforts to work on his mechanics and learn the playbook will pay off.  His offensive coordinator couldn't say enough about his work ethic in an interview yesterday.  Bortles is usually one of the first guys in each day, and one of the last to leave.
