Potential Cecil Shorts Contract?

#81

Quote:In any event theres NO reason to rush with any deal. I'd wait until the offseason to make ANY decision on a contract extension for Cecil.

And I still maintain that if another team gave us a trade offer in the next 2 weeks, that we couldn't refuse for Cecil, like a 2nd or 3rd rounder, I'd take it.
I agree with you in principle, but I really doubt that anyone would give us a 3rd-round pick for a #2 wideout with an injury history and an expiring contract. If the Monroe deal is any indication, I think the best we'd get for him is a 5th, and he's worth more than that to the offense.

Quote:$11M guaranteed for a #2 is a decent deal.
I agree but with them drafting Lee and Robinson in the 2nd round, do you really think he's the future #2 WR?

I see all the rookies being better than him, so he is expendable in my eyes.

How so?

Lee has done pretty much nothing and Hurns after a hot start hasn't done much in the last few games either.

Quote:I'll give you Monroe and Pot Roast, but Daryl Smith? He played well last year but hasn't played well this year, he's old, let it go.
Smith and Clemens are the same age and he hasn't looked good. Rather have Smith than Reynolds or Thomas out there.

What did shorts look like his rookie season? They have already surpassed him, and they have huge potential that we all never thought shorts had.

So you're saying Shorts from Mount Union College and Lee from USC were/are expected to be equal in their first years?

Ummm....no.

Don't agree that Hurns is better, very inconsistent. Lee is still unproven but I think (hope) he'll be our #2 going into the offseason.

If that's the case, I don't see us resigning Shorts

Hopelessly inept, if I recall correctly. Still, lots of guys have looked good early on then fallen off (Gratz). If the team believes that Shorts and Robinson are the future on the outside with Lee working the slot and Hurns a luxury at #4, then re-sign him. Just wait until the end of the year, after he's proven that he's healthy, to do it.

If they believe that Shorts is the #3, then don't waste time trying to bring him back, because someone out there will make him #2.

I don't have a real good feeling about Hurns.

I hope I'm wrong but the guy just seems 50/50 on whether he'll catch the ball. Some of the balls he does catch he doesn't catch very 'clean'.

Yeah he seems like he'll be a decent depth player but not sure if he's any good at special teams, would be nice to keep him around as a 4th or 5th WR going forward if he had value on ST

I've always thought that hands is something you just have or you don't. Really sucks because he seems to have a knack for getting open and making plays once he does catch the ball.

Absolutely agree on the 'hands' part.

Unless Jerry Sullivan is your WR coach. Wink

Jimmy retired in 05 and David wasn't the starting QB till 07.

That said, I'd keep Shorts around past the trade deadline this year unless another team gives us an offer we can't refuse for Shorts, i.e. a 3rd rounder or higher.

It doesn't.  It's a projection based on WR contracts that have been done recently.

I don't think it would be a big deal.  People will always freak out about the total contract value but the guaranteed money is what's important.  $11 mil over 4 or 5 years is peanuts in the league.  Especially with the salary cap going up every year.  It's not like we have another receiver coming up on the end of a contract that needs to be resigned.  Honestly there's no reason to not sign him.

I wonder if he even wants to resign here

So who is the number 1? Robinson?
