Year 4 of the "rebuild"...Dave Caldwell's talent took us to 3-13

Quote:The 2, 4 yr vets are bums. House, Prince, Gipson need to go. I like Cyprien he reminds me of Bob Sanders for his size and he isn't afraid to come up and hit like some of the others. Do you think the 2 Vets will be better next year cause it was the system that they were new to. And next year when they aren't in the Ice Cream Zone it will be just fine. “An empty vessel makes the loudest sound, so they that have the least wit are the greatest babblers.”. - Plato

Quote:Conveniently ignoring the fact that it's already been said that Caldwell didn't hire Gus on his own. It was a joint decision between Dave, Mark, and both Khans. One that Dave didn't seem willing to own during his press conference recently. Blake has regressed this season...extremely bad. Regardless of how you want to see it, Dave hired Gus. the 2013 draft class excuse again? lol. come on. "It was just a matter of time before Gus Bradley became a head coach in the NFL and the Jacksonville Jaguars are extremely fortunate that Gus will be on our sidelines for many years to come," Caldwell said in a statement. "Gus more than met every criteria we insisted on from our new head coach, and his intangibles and leadership abilities are exceptional. Gus is who the Jaguars need now and in the future."
Quote:Yeah, we totally should've kept all those great players from the last regime. He still mad we didn't keep Knighton, Cox, and Lowery.

Quote:And next year when they aren't in the Ice Cream Zone it will be just fine. What does that say about the character of this team then? If they sucked simply because they could and no one held them accountable? That's not the mental make up of a unit that's going to perform under pressure when it counts. We're talking about a weak mental state as our best hope for the reason this roster is a pile of garbage. perhaps they're just not that good............ Quote:I can agree with this.. But I can't say that for every team.. And that's my point..What are you saying "But I cant say that for every team". Which GM has power over the owner? There isnt any NFL GM that has power to over step an NFL owner. Think about what your saying. You said the GM can fire a coach without consent, thats not true at all. Theres a chain of command. No GM can fire a coach without the Owners consent. None and usually, when a coach gets fired its because the owner will step in. Quote:Blake has regressed this season...extremely bad. Regardless of how you want to see it, Dave hired Gus. the 2013 draft class excuse again? lol. come on. So, somehow Caldwell should have identified all pro talent in a crappy draft because someone with your vast expertise says so, and because the draft was void of quality talent, that's an excuse. I love it when you deep thinkers can't rationalize facts with anything of substance so you dismiss it as a. Excuse. I gusss that's the best we can hope for from a dim bulb. Never argue with idiots. They drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.
Quote:No but we should've been smart enough to not try and chase unicorns. David's problem has always been this mythical scheme he wants to recreate in "seattle south". It's why he hired Gus, it's why we went and looked for Zone Blocking Lineman, it's why we went and looked for this LEO and OTTO garbage and took tweeners at the top of the draft, it's why we ushered off other players that didn't fit the scheme Daryl Smith and Terrence Knighton. A. Seattle South was Gus's idea B. The Zone, both running and defensive, was Gus's idea. C. If you really think that GMs don't chase the type of players the coach wants for his scheme then I think you missed the boat in your assessment. D. We've discussed Smith and Knighton at length and neither was playing here the next year. You don't get to force FAs to play for what you want to pay them. E. This roster has plenty of talent, Doug Marrone turned out perfectly acceptable performances the last two weeks on short notice. Whoever the next coach is, he's getting a young and talented roster. “An empty vessel makes the loudest sound, so they that have the least wit are the greatest babblers.”. - Plato

Quote:He still mad we didn't keep Knighton, Cox, and Lowery.Of the players Caldwell didn't bring back, these three were the secret to success. We will just ignore the fact that Knighton made it clear he wanted to follow Del Rio and didn't want to stay in Jax, and that Cox was out of the league what? A year later because he simply couldn't stay on the field? And Lowery? Really? The only real miss was in letting Daryll Smith leave in free agency, and even there it was a decision made based on how he fit the scheme. It's not like he was replaced with chopped liver. Never argue with idiots. They drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.
Quote:Blake has regressed this season...extremely bad. Regardless of how you want to see it, Dave hired Gus. the 2013 draft class excuse again? lol. come on. What should he have said? "We really have a terrible situation here. The players are god awful and the only guy we could to come here is Gus Bradley who may or may not be a good head coach. He's a really nice guy though, so we have high hopes." “An empty vessel makes the loudest sound, so they that have the least wit are the greatest babblers.”. - Plato
Quote:A. Seattle South was Gus's idea I think you're over estimating the strength of the competition these last two weeks. Yes we beat a bad tacks team and then turned around and lost at the end to a horrible clot team. If that's what we're shooting for then we just have different expectations in year 4 of a rebuild.

So you don't agree with your coach and defy him thereby risking your million dollar salary? If that's what we're shooting for then we just have different expectations in year 4 of a rebuild. You said the GM can fire a coach without consent, thats not true at all. Theres a chain of command. No GM can fire a coach without the Owners consent. None and usually, when a coach gets fired its because the owner will step in. Once again I never said a gm had power over owner.. Its not the owner who hires coaches.. I don't believe every gm in the league needs permission from the owner to fire a coach.. If Caldwell wanted to fire Gus then he could have fired him.. Of course he let Khan know but he don't need his permission.. Its his job.
While I think that Dave is largely to blame for the state of the franchise, I do think that he's improved from his first year. The problem with hiring both a rookie GM and rookie HC is that they have no track record in those positions to judge them by.
Dave's last FA and draft class is significantly better than year 1. That shows that he's learned his lessons and maybe, just maybe, he's hired the right scouts and everything to make better decisions. So - yes, he is to blame for the record this year, but if he isn't fired then I'm not going to have any heartburn over it. If he screws up the coaching hire again and Blake doesn't show any progress in his contract year, then he'll be gone after next year and it will all be for naught as we go through yet another rebuild. Let's just sit back and relax and enjoy the ride. And maybe if they hire Tom Coughlin as President of Football Operations, then we may even have a chance at the playoffs next year. Quote:Hire bobblehead Gus- Strike one. In the case of Gus, one never knows just how well a coordinator will do as a head coach. I was all for hiring a proven head coach, but the fact is that in 2013 the Jags were a team with a 1-year owner who had already fired two head coaches in the course of a year, trash for a roster, and a "franchise QB" who curled up into a fetal ball at any sign of a pass rush. Do you think a good head coach with other options would choose that? Gus, a coordinator with a solid record, appeared to be the best option at the time. I agree he should have been fired much sooner (week six of 2015) but none of us knows whether it was Khan or Caldwell who made the decision to keep him. Don't blame a guy who might have had no say in firing Gus. How can you be sure that the problem with Joeckel and Bortles was with the players, rather than a failure to develop then by the coaching staff? I think that's especially true of the DBs, not one of whom have developed beyond the skills they showed in their first year with the team. Bortles has looked a whole lot better since Gus was fired. Caldwell has brought a lot of free agents to the Jags. Most were fine their first year with the team but dropped off in their second year. Again that points to coaching, not talent evaluation. "Why should I give information to you when all you want to do is find something wrong with it?"
Quote: Hmm. Funny how the longer guys played under Gus, the worse they got. Even Joeckel had a great game at LT in his first start before the injury. "Why should I give information to you when all you want to do is find something wrong with it?" Quote:Key word "coordinator". Does it make logical since to hire a unproven coach to begin a rebuild? Fellas let's not live in the past.. The future awaits us lol..Are you seriously arguing rebuilding football teams should not hire coordinators to become head coaches if they are unproven as head coaches? If so then: Dallas was silly for hiring Tom Landry Green Bay was dumb for hiring this guy named Vince Lombardi, and another guy named Mike Holmgren. Washington was out of their minds for hiring Joe Gibbs The Bucs never should have hired Tony Dungy The Bengals never should have hired Marvin Lewis There were these guys named Noll, Cowher and Tomlin who never should have sullied the Pittsburgh franchise. Chicago should have never hired Mike Ditka or Lovie Smith Denver should have never hired Dan Reeves Mike Smith should have never had the chance to become the franchise's all time best coach in terms of W-L record in Atlanta. New Orleans were ain'ts for hiring Sean Payton. Furthermore, there are plenty of teams that have hired proven head coaches that failed. Cleveland and KC failed with Romeo Crennel Tampa failed with Ray Perkins and Sam Wyche. Marion Campbell had myriad failed stints as a head coach. Worst to 1st. Curse Reversed!
