Consider this: Someone is signing these “big name” free agents and its not us, but yet we are the parental bottom feeder. Are all the teams signing big names also going 4 and suck?
It’s obvious that avoiding FA is not helping us. Maybe embracing it will. Why are we (collectively as NFL fans) afraid of Free Agency? I understand that sometimes players sign lucrative deals and then production drops off. But I have a hard time believing that is the motivation of an NFL player. I have changed jobs for more money and more opportunity, but I didn’t stop working. I would think GM’s would approach FA just like the draft. Researching the player ‘til nauseam. The difference being, you can evaluate against current NFL caliber players. Don’t other sports do this? The hated Yankees come to mind. Year after year they sign huge names to huge deals. They also win a lot. So the question is…..Why is Football so different? I say with a $50m cap we sign everyone we can.
The career length of MLB players are a lot longer than NFL players are.
I'm trying to make myself more informed and less opinionated.
Stop saying whatever stupid thing you're talking about and pay attention to all the interesting things I have to say! Evidence Depending on Information Available Quote:Which NFL big spenders are also perennial contenders? Well…just looking at 2014 Playoff teams…these teams where big spenders…. It’s a huge list of 2013 FA’s, but one thing stands out. The Jaguars didn’t spend. We also didn’t make the playoffs. holding back never works in the NFL. No reason why we can't target a proven talent. It could be at just about any position except maybe WR.
No pain, no gain.
Pretty good article on this topic:

The team has big holes on the offensive line and at quarterback, but if it can come up with long-term solutions to those positions this season, the team could be turning a corner and getting pointed in the right direction.
Sports Illustrated ranked us as having the best offseason outlook:

Spending a lot on free agents can come back to bite you when it's time to re-sign your own stars.
Unfortunately, we don't have any of stars on this team at all yet. I don't see why we can't "build through the draft" and also sign 1 "premium" player, like Greg Hardy. You don't have to keep spending like that, but to expect your roster to compete for the playoffs with a bunch of castoffs is also not the way to go.

I expect Caldwell to sign 1 or 2 big free agents. We have 50 million under the cap so no reason to be cheap. The team could sign Mack and a good pass rusher with barely making a dent in the cap room.

I think the new CBA is going to affect free agency a great deal. Most players are entering free agency between 25-27 rather than 27-29. Doesn't seem like a big deal, but a 25 year old is more likely to have upside and more likely to be motivated by the chance of a third contract. I think you'll see several players have their best years with their second team.

We have the money i think Caldwell is gonna spend it. I expect one big time FA at the DE or OLB spot and then a couple mid level guys to fill out the O-line.

I tentatively expect he'll tie up between 25 and 32 million of the cap space this year. (just a gut feeling) I mean - IIRC - he's required to spend a significant percentage of that 20 mil rollover. You can get a lot done with that. It's an exciting time right now with FA right around the corner. This team is about to get better. (this dollar figure range includes re-signing Henne, Pasztor, Todman and maybe W Blackmon BTW)
