Brandon Allen - Should he start at least one game?

Quote:Facts, Manuwai was quietly the best LG in the league not named Faneca until the injury in 2008. Dude was a true road grader in terms of run blocking and would just wash the 3-technique tackle 1v1 most plays in pass protection. Looking back our Offensive Line was actually rather stout. If we had the 2007 starting OLine on this roster... we're potentially contending for the Division Crown.
he wasnt better than Steve Hutchinson either, but yeah Manuwai was beast. I wish we had another guard like that

The season is over.  Might as well see what he's got.  He won't though.  Bradley is going to try to squeeze 4 wins to save face.

Would you blame him? On a personal level I mean, not as a Jags fan.

Honestly, there has to be a point of saying this is not working.  And I will chalk this a learning experience.  And let the young guy have a shot.  Rather, Then go with Blake for rest of year.  Because it won't matter if keep on losing anyway. An will eliminate himself from other jobs in the Nfl.  Trying stuff that failed before and expecting different results.

I totally understand where you're coming from, but I can't imagine he's high on the list of contenders for other potential NFL jobs anyway..

Can Allen be any worse than Bortles? Nothing to lose in finding out. If there is any redemption for Bortles, the answer may not be by digging a hole and burying his confidence in it.

Calling Deshawn Watson a future bust since 3/19/17. If I eat crow, I will keep this in here and proclaim JackCity a genius.

I actually agree with the sentiment here...

Do we put Allen in though and wreck his confidence if he doesn't produce? That's the worry.

No, he can't be worse but he wouldn't be any better.  Our pass patterns are terrible and separation is evidently a dirty word.

He's a 4th round pick, I think expectations are low. I would put em out there and see what you got and don't expect much.

You don't evaluate a third string QB who probably hasn't even taken more than a handful of snaps in practices since the preseason ended. If you think this franchise looks like a laughingstock now, that would pretty much seal the deal. There will be plenty of time to evaluate him and any other QB on the roster when the season ends. Barring injury, Bortles isn't going to be benched for Allen. If he does get hurt, it won't be Allen trotting out there either.
Never argue with idiots. They drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.

Would love to see what Allen can do

You'll have an entire off season, OTAs, mini camps, training camp, and the preseason to see.

I wouldn't throw him in the fire @HOU one of the very best pass defenses in the league, but I'd let him get his first start at home against the Titans the next week.

It isnt the same as a live game. We are already a laughing stock, the least we can do it see what we got.

You can fantasize about a mediocre third string QB as much as you like. The clipboard is securely in his grasp the rest of the season. They won't bench Bortles to see what he can do.

Absolutely, and nor should they.

Exactly! What would be gained from playing him? This staff won't be here next year. Allen will have to prove himself all over again with the new staff. Personally, I'd be shocked if Allen was even on the team next year.

Agree on all points.

The people calling for Allen have always been in the "anybody but (insert starters name here)" club. The staff is done at the end of the year. Everyone knows this. That includes the evaluators that are supposedly expected to do so.

Allen was hardly memorable during the preseason. Nothing is going to magically change at this point. When the new staff takes over, I would suspect the only QB guaranteed to be here will be Bortles, but even he will be competing for a roster spot.

Why shouldn't they see what Allen can do?  Live games and practices are very different.  There is nothing to gain by leaving in Bortles the rest of the season.  And nothing to lose by playing Allen.

What you do gain is film on Allen and an assessment of how he can handle a regular season game or 2 or 3.

Where's the down side?

In my humble opinion, the NFL crowds take no prisoners. A kid being thrown in at the deep end for an underperforming and underachieving team with a hostile (and understandably so) fanbase could kill whatever confidence he has.

Sure, it could work in his favour and he could thrive on that. For me, though, I don't think it's right. I personally don't think there's anything to gain from it. Like I always say, differing opinions are what keeps message boards interesting. It would be boring if we all agreed.
