He's made some nice plays since he was a rookie. What he's done recently moves him away from replaceable. You don't give up on a young, talented player who shows promise, after 3 years.

 

Eh, there are Marquise Lees in every draft. Heck, in this one you have John Ross from Washington and Dede Westbrook from OU.

I'm not trying to over hype lee... I agree that he's been dissappointing in the prior 2 years, but to see his development this year is a positive on a team that has regressed in so many other areas.

I've been one of Lee's harshest critics, but even I am starting to change my tone on him. He was always the most explosive of our receivers, that was never the question with him. My question with him has been his route running and that he has terrible ball skills. He's shown improvement on those in the last few weeks, and the TD he caught vs Detroit (against a very good CB in Slay btw) would be something he'd try to body catch (and thus drop). He's gotten open quite a few times on drags, crosses, and deep and our QB has routinely thrown it behind, ahead, or short of him.

Caldwell is responsible for bringing the players to the team...he can't be held responsible for coaching them up to the NFL level.

No, but he's responsible for recommending the guy he thinks can coach.


We see how well his HC recommendation has panned out.


If we let Caldwell pick the next coach we're gonna have to extend him. He hasn't done enough in the draft and free agency to warrant that. He's closer to blowing 75 percent of his 4 top 5 picks than not. The guy has blown gobs of money on FAs that have produced 14 wins in 4 seasons. He's used high draft picks and expensive free agents to build an offensive line that's helped Blake be the most sacked QB in the league since he's started.


To be totally honest, Caldwell isn't much better than Gene was. It's staring us right in the face. It's a mistake to reward him for the last 4 years.

The 'Dave picked good players that haven't been coached up' argument is extremely presumptuous too, just to throw that out there. It's highly possible, if not probable, that Joeckel, Bortles, Fowler, and many of the later picks wouldn't have worked out no matter who was coaching them.

But it boils down Caldwell trying to build this roster around this mythical scheme he thinks is the end all be all. We've been chasing this unicorn called a LEO and his sister the OTTO for how long? We went and gutted the oline and got guys like beadles because he fit the mold of a pulling guard that should be better and zone blocking. We neglected the safety position for 3 years because we where looking for a hybrid free safety that could free up a glorified linebacker to play strong safety in the box.


I just don't understand why we wouldn't focus solely on getting the best possible talent and all positions and then saying ok we have this group now let's build a scheme that plays to their strength. Instead we've been on this square peg in a round hole for the last 4 years and now we all realize hot damn that square peg ain't goin in this round hole!

Drafting for need is another broken philosophy Dave has admitted to. That's one of my beliefs about drafting: you don't draft based on scheme. Dave does. Fowler and Bortles weren't the most talented players available when Dave picked them. A lot of us thought it then and it's being proven now.

Most jags fans have directed their ire towards Gus Bradley, which is understandable considering Bradley is the face of incompetence. I'm of the opinion that this organization has a much bigger problem than Bradley, and that problem is David Caldwell. Considering the current state of this football team, you can make the argument that David Caldwell has been one of the worst GM's in football over the past 4 years, especially considering the resources (high draft picks and infinite cap space) he's had to work with. Bradley (both locally and nationally) has caught a lot flack and criticism, but David Caldwell is the architect of the mess, and needs to be shown the door sooner than later. Enjoy the article

First time gm.  Spoiled on a dynamite coaching tree.  So while his job is to pick the hc.   Not many hc are big on blowing things up and taken a gamble. Where as this spot be no need too.

the leo is just a 4-3 defensive end hes not trying to draft anything special with that theyre just bad at drafting so they took fowler

Is he light years better? Because his record doesn't suggest so, and he's had way more money and way higher picks to spend than even Gene did, yet here we are, staring 2-14 in the face in year 4.


Some people on here want heads to roll after 1 season, some can't see how bad this entire staff is after 4 seasons. Funny place this forum of ours is.

I am to the point where the entire front office and coaching staff needs to be overhauled. Caldwell might have hit on a few high draft picks, but he decided to keep Bradley around (a season or two too long). Also, Caldwell is tied to Bortles. Bortles looks like unfixable garbage, similar to Mark Sanchez. Sanchez had better mechanics though. If Caldwell isn't gone and Bortles is just given the starting position, it won't matter who our head coach is, our team will be pretty much the same thing next season.

The Titans GM turned the Titans into a division contender in 1 offseason.

He built a really good offensive line, which is key to winning games. That line was built with high draft picks with two different regimes, though.
