Make an arguement on why Caldwell should stay.

#81

Quote:Ehh... I'm of the opinion that Caldwell has assembled enough talent to have this team playing .500 football and the coaches aren't preparing the team adequately or developing players' talents effectively.

But he has made errors that get GMs fired.

He botched the HC hire.

His QB choice is turning out to be much more of a project than he thought he'd be and may never approach "franchise QB" level.

It's pretty tough to call at the moment for me. I feel like he's smart enough to right the ship if given the chance but it's hard to know to what degree Dave has learned from his mistakes - and if he'll repeat them.

Did Caldwell assemble the talent or did the jaguars horrible losing for 4 years assemble the roster... I mean how hard is it to pass up on guys like Ramsey and Lee and Jack... I mean even Gene Smith could make those picks... My thing is all the wasted picks he has had as well..The Denard Robinson, Gratz,Ace Sanders,Luke Joeckel and numerous more... He has missed more then hit... So he deserves to be gone...

Keep Caldwell si we can get an edge on late draft day picks from our experience in coaching the Senior Bowl.

Telvin Smith, Allen Robinson, Marqise Lee, Aaron Colvin, Allen Hurns, and Brandon Linder were all great picks/signings unaffected by the Jags record. Good picks.

Leave Gene out of it. His early picks were worse and he passed up on plenty of talent to take guys like  Gabbert, Rackley, Britton, Alualu, and a punter in the third round.  Please... no comparisons to Smith. Saying he'd have picked Ramsey, Jack and Lee is just hot air.  There's no precedent in his track record to suggest he'd take those guys.

I disliked Gene Smith more than I currently do for Bradley. Gene single handily ruined this franchise and put us in the biggest hole that we're still trying to get out of.

Nice gif. Pretty much sums up the last decade of being a Jags fan.

Quote:Who is Bradley's boss?  It's Dave Caldwell.  Who was in for the hire of Bradley?  It's Dave Caldwell.  Who agreed to give Gus an Extension?  It's Dave Caldwell. etc etc

If Caldwell went to Khan and said He wanted Gus gone, Khan would back him.

It's not all about Coaching either.  Joeckle lacks the strength to play LT in the nfl, Bortles can't make wide open throws, Fowler is not an edge rusher, the offensive and defense line continue to be a problem after 4 years.  The coaches are responsible but they can only coach average talent so far.   Caldwell has missed on his drafts.  My first question I had about him was he retained some of Gene Smith's college scouts.  It all starts with the top.

I agree and have finally come around to the GM being an issue.

The plan was a long term plan and the patience required was understandable but...   we are now being lapped by the division and other teams that had a one or two year downturn.

Our plan was...

1. "hope" the acquisitions would fix the offensive line. - FAIL

2. Sit the fundamentally flawed QB ala Aaron Rodgers path to success - FAIL (I'm guilty because I saw the experience being worth while)

3. Focus fully on Offense first even thought the Coach is a "defense" guy - FAIL

4. Extend the coach so free agents would want to come here - FAIL

5. Win the Off Season to generate ticket sales despite a bad on field project while you preach patience - WIN

Oh and the real SALT in the wound is the high probability that Cleveland puts it together faster than we do and shows gains the next 7 weeks.

Do the Jags have a "president of football operations"? If not, they need one imo

Khan isn't a hands on owner

Quote:Bortles should have sat his rookie year. Fact. Crybaby fans started crying for him by week 3 of his rookie year and the weak coaches caved in. The coaches should have been fired after Bortles first game for ruining his development.

Fans were crying for bortles, then, but the reason he got a start was cause Henne got hurt in the previous colts game that year before bortles started

Telvin, Arob, and Linder were great picks. Trying to claim Lee and Colvin as the 4th or 5th best pick out of 3 drafts worth of elite picks (not counting 2016 draft yet) shows how bad he really has been. That's a really sad list all things considered...

Dave has hit on majority of draft based on where picked.  And is down the middle on fa.  That is great.  It is not his job to coach and train.

Name a GM who hired the worst HC in NFL history, drafted two top 5 busts in a row and still managed to keep their job after doing so.

The answer is, its never happened before.

You missed the point.

I was disproving the "he only drafted well because of losing seasons and draft position" argument.

Also - your diminishment of Lee is a little ridiculous. Unless you are one of those guys that blames GMs for injuries.

I'm just trying to disprove the "he drafted well for any reason" argument. 3 top players and another 3 or so decently average players out of 3 full drafts of top 5 picks is just bad no matter how you slice it. Especially when only none of those top players comes from the top 6 most valuable picks.

I also don't think I'm diminishing Lee. I think anyone trying to prop him up is being the brash one. The Jags have played 41 games, and Lee has played 32, since he was drafted and he has been good for like 4 of them. It's a promising stretch he is on, but many an average player has had a good month long stretch. I will wait and see.
