Some thoughts on Blake Bortles

His TDs were down and his rating because of that, and that's a direct result of Fournette producing in the red zone. When Founette was out BBs stats were better. TDs were down because the Jags had the #1 run game in the NFL and punched it in when they got close to the end zone whereas in previous years Bortles would be relied on to pass it in from inside the 5. Case in point, Bortles hits Cole for a 45 yarder against Pittsburgh to the 3 and Fournette punches it in the next play. Or 2 passes from Bortles to the 1 yard line against SF and Fournette and Yeldon punch it in the next play. They don't show as touchdowns for Bortles on the stat sheet but essentially he moved the team down the field on the strength of his passing. Only New Orleans had more rushing touchdowns during the regular season, and the Jags lead the postseason in rushing touchdowns. Alot of this is due to Bortles being able to extend drives and get the team in position for short touchdown runs. Having a run game this year was huge. They hadn't had double digit rushing touchdowns since 2010. This year they had 18. We show less advertisements to registered users. Accounts are free; join today! Blake could absolutely improve next year but he can also regress. Just like he did in 2016. He is still inaccurate and his ball placement is still below average. You still have games where you're not sure which Blake will show up. One week he shreds the Seahawks but then he can also have an atrocious game against the Titans. He can have a game where he has more rushing yards than passing but then also a game where he helps you get a 10 point lead in the 4th quarter of the AFC championship game. This team needs consistency.

Blakes numbers were down because they are asking him to do the bare minimum. It's clear as day that the Jags were running the ball inside the 5 yard line where previous seasons they had to rely on Bortles to pass for a touchdown. No more than 9 rushing touchdowns in any season since 2010 and then this year they had 18. Add 9 more passing touchdowns to Bortles numbers and people are talking about locking up our pro bowl QB long term. All I'm saying is his TD number took a hit since the running game could be relied on this year to punch it in. This really isn't even debatable. Blakes numbers were down because they are asking him to do the bare minimum. I'm not looking at his TD passes because overall, they're irrelevant. What you can look at is ball placement and accuracy. 60% this year and that's a career high. That's pretty bad. I'm not saying he can't improve because he's only 25 and certainly can continue to improve but no one knows what this offense would look like with a better QB. Marrone and Hackett seem to play to their teams strengths. QB is not the strength of this team. If they had a better QB who could make all the throws consistently, I would expect the offense to change.

Just replacing Lee will bring him up to about 63% and reduce his INTs by 2. “An empty vessel makes the loudest sound, so they that have the least wit are the greatest babblers.”. - Plato

The jags had more rushing touchdowns from running backs inside the 5 yard line this year than they did in his first 3 years combined. As much as his td numbers were inflated by the absolute ineptness of the running game in 2015, they took a hit in a year where the jags were 2nd in the nfl in rushing touchdowns.
I think Bortles needs some credit, he has improved massively this year, throwing for a majority of the time to rookie receivers.
Fournette was good, but has been average at best, with his 1 dimensional running for large parts of the season, he became easy to predict and stop. I know Bortles has flaws, and he seems to struggle once we are chasing the game or he loses his head. However another year under TC should help him massively. Instead of trading up for a QB, I think we should draft to improve the O-line, which was boosted massively by Cam Robinson. We also need a new TE as Lewis seems to have his best days behind him, the TE position is becoming a vital receiving position and this could boost our offense massively. With an improved O-line and ARob back next year, Bortles could put up some good numbers. I don't think the answer is drafting a young QB as a starter, definitely cut Henne and bring someone in to compete with Bortles though, but a QB is not the answer in the current market. I also think people forget that Bortles is still a young QB and has at least another 10 playing years in him. When i saw his tears in the AFC championship game, it made me realize how much he wants to win for the Jags. Dont get me wrong, i've been frustrated with Bortles at times, but he is still the future in my opinion (01-30-2018, 12:05 PM)Cleatwood Wrote:(01-30-2018, 11:42 AM)jagsfan1983 Wrote: It's clear as day that the Jags were running the ball inside the 5 yard line where previous seasons they had to rely on Bortles to pass for a touchdown. Smith is gone and Cousins isn't a huge hit above Bortles.(01-31-2018, 02:44 PM)Cleatwood Wrote: My point was that 60% is his career high. CAREER.
Let's Get Em!!!! Go Jags!
Bortles career low is 59% and career high is 60%. Also he has had a short career. Alex Smith had a 56.3% completion percentage career through age 25 season. Kirk Cousins was 56.2%. Bortles is above 59% for the career.
Through his age 27 season Brady was a 61.6% passer. Since 64.6%. It's almost like these quarterbacks can improve the more experience they have in the NFL. It's going to be the Trashman as our guy this year. He got us to the AFC championship. 2 - 1 in the playoffs on the first year in Hackett's system. Young guy who is durable as hell. Also classy.
Everyone here should be cheering for #5.
You're Welcome.

Because no other team in the league has drops. The good news is there are people who track drops and the numbers are quantifiable. Jaguars had the 3rd highest drop % in the league at 4.96%. Kansas City was at 3.50% New England 3.24% Washington 3.15% So yes drops were a factor more than most other teams. By the way 3 other quarterbacks in the top 5 in terms of drop percentage were Matt Ryan, Derek Carr, and Eli Manning. All of whom were viewed as having down years (particularly in completion %) to which the drops no doubt contributed.
Some people want change just for the sake of change. Little to no thought and skewing stats to fit their agendas seem to be the norm. Bortles could have a year end passer rating of 128 and people would still find fault with his game play.
