Quick Thoughts ON QB Scenario

Also, do not overpay for Foles.  It'll be just like the Vikings with Cousins.  The Jags need cap space to re-sign their young defensive stars that they drafted.   You build a team through the draft and re-signing your own talent, not overpaying for free agents.

They'd be better off with Fitzpatrick or Tyrod Taylor for a year to get them by this year, and either trading back for more picks or taking the BAP at number 7.

You sort-of had me until Tyrod Taylor came up.

If the Jags sign that guy and don't draft a QB early - I'll seriously shift from being the most harcore fan to a very casual observer until TC and Caldwell are both run out of town.  That would be a grave error.

Now if they sign him and draft a guy - then the drafted guy will just end up starting by week four.
It'll still be stupid, but not as stupid. Maybe I'd still attend games.

Signing Taylor would be operating from the same mindset that made them double down on Bortles and they damn well better know that was a dumb move by now.

(not attacking you - just dislike that players skill set)

Taylor would be a wise, inexpensive short term fill.

He's very good at protecting the football, which is the opposite of Bortles.

I'd rather we pass than reach in this draft.  Slim pickings in this QB class.  Maybe they go Jones.  Otherwise, I don't think we'll find anything better than a backup this year even if we draft.

The problem is, Taylor won't be "inexpensive." He's arguably the top FA QB this offseason so he's sure to command a bit.  He's also really not that much better than Bortles whose additional $4.5 mil cap hit is nothing by comparison.

If your bringing in Taylor you might as well stick with Bortles another year. I am far from a Bortles fan but Taylor is just as bad. It makes 0 sense to replace your trash with another type of trash.

Taylor is worse than Blake and that’s saying something.

I'd absolutely field Bortles as a bridge QB before I'd pay good money for Taylor to do an equal or lesser job of it.
And God knows, I'm hoping that doesn't happen.

If I’m the Jags, I’m taking Haskins and starting him day 1.

This right here. Think back to the year Mariota and Winston came out. Everyone thought at least one was a sure thing, and now both may done as starters before their second contracts.

Sure, most people think the 2020 QB class will be great, but you just never know. You obviously scout them and 2019 class and see where you get the most value.

Also, that the longer you wait, the more of the current Jags defense you will start to lose. By 2020, Dareus and Bouye may be gone. By 2021, maybe both Mack and Telvin. True some have not been as dominant as last year, but Jags would have to find players to fill those spots in the draft

So, I get a bit annoyed that so many people want Flacco or Taylor as bridge QB. Sure, these are "safe" and "conservative" QB's, but to me that means the Jags could probably be in the 7-9 to 9-7 range. That also means a fringe playoff team, but that also probably means a team that won't win it all and and then will have a middling pick.

I almost prefer going with more of a gamble like with Fitzpatrick. If he surges, you would have a dynamic team that could make some noise. If he busts, you at least end up with a super high draft pick.

STAY AWAY FROM HASKINS!

I too think we need to stay away from Haskins, like I said in another thread I cant think of any Urban Meyer QB's that went on to have a really good NFL career and that's including his time in Florida.

Tebow was robbed!

I thought about Taylor in Jax. He will never be an upper echelon QB, but he isn't the worst. And I think Bort has a lower floor than TT, and about the same ceiling, plus he shouldn't cost too much, one wouldn't think.

Joe Flucco? I doubt he makes them a fringe playoff QB. Other than his Super Bowl run, he's been below average. He caught lightening in a bottle that post season but never has or will again. I'd probably go with Fitz or Taylor and draft a QB.

Everyone forgets how otherworldly Anquan Bolden was in that playoff run.

He was getting 10/90 balls all day long (10% him, 90% defender) because Flacco sucked then too.

Obviously I have a low opinion of the Taylor's ability.

But - if his ceiling is about the same as Blake - you may as well play the guy you're already forced to spend millions on instead of paying for two crappy quarterbacks.

Anyway  - I have some faith in this front office to make a better effort upgrading the position than bringing in Tyrod Taylor - so I'm not really concerned.

Besides inexperience, what part of Haskins game needs improvement? From everything I've seen (I haven't watched a lot of college football), I'm extremely impressed by everything he does.
