Not sure what his beer belly has to do with anything. I didn't realize coaches were required to have the chiseled bodies of Greek gods in order to be eligible to run a team. Someone probably needs to let Andy Reid know this.

Just a third-party observation (I don't know why I like to read your board,) but I think the makings of a good head coach is the ability to adjust your (all-mighty) scheme to the players that you have on the roster.  My biggest criticism of Gus Bradley is that the constant need for a LEO/OTTO that was not on the roster, didn't allow him to shift the defensive approach.  He ran consistently a cover-3 secondary, rather than nickel because that was his SCHEME, despite not having the proper personnel.

 

I think counting on off-season signings, and especially a drafted class (though I thought the Jaguars did phenomenally,) is that these guys are rookies. Down the road it should surely pay off, but predicting a master class of talent in this year is a bit too hopeful.

With the notable exception of Forsett, all of those guys you mentioned were on the 2012 roster, and the team won fewer games than they did in 2013.

 

It seems to me there are at least three possibilities that completely wreck your thesis:

 

1.  Your nucleus isn't as good as you imagine them to be;

 

2.  They were actually more productive under Bradley than his immediate predecessor (Mularkey-who has actually coached a team with a winning record);

 

3.  Both 1 & 2 are true.

What adjustment could ANY NFL defense have to not having a viable pass rusher and still be effective overall?

 

Perhaps they could blitz more, but given the problems in the secondary the Jaguars have had, it would be inviting disaster to blitz and leave poor DBs in man.

 

They have reportedly run nickel packages more than half the time.

It dont take a team full of probowlers to win games... People need to acknowledge that this was Gus first head coaching gig... Maybe he just wasnt that good enough a Head Coach as well.

Yes, Todd Bowles went 10-6 his first year.

 

He had guys like Muhammad Wilkerson, Sheldon Richardson, Leonard Williams, a declining but still good Darelle Revis, Nick Mangold, Brandon Marshall and Eric Decker.

 

Bradley in his first year here had nothing close to that number of quality players.
