The Way Too Early 53-man Roster

Quote:Hey jags02 what's the dline depth chart look like with the Werner signing..

I can see Werner sticking as the 3rd LEO and 11th DL. So...

LEO
(3): Dante Fowler, Yannick Ngakoue, Bjoern Werner

DT:
(3): Malik Jackson, Sen'Derrick Marks, Sheldon Day

NT
(2): Roy Miller, Abry Jones

DE
(3): Jared Odrick, Ryan Davis, Jonathan Woodard

Their other draft pick, Holmes, I have at OTTO.

It makes me wonder if they doubt how ready & willing is Dante Fowler Jr at Leo that they signed Bjoern Werner...

I think Yannick Ngakoue will get the most sacks out of the 3...

Dante reminds me a lot of Tyson Alualu in that he'll probably be best at stopping the run rather than getting at the QB or interceptions...

Bjoern will struggle to make the team IMO... but im rooting for him.. since I'm german/irish

Malik played RE last year while he is mainly a DT.. how will he do with the switch..

is Marks really healthy or like Lee destined to get injured again...

Is Day the real deal or like Bennett...

Miller is underestimated and a fantastic NT!

Arby Jones .. blah...

Odrick much was asked of him last year but he's had time to learn the playbook & with more talent should play better this year IMO.

Ryan Davis year to shine or go away with time.. we will find out this season!

I don't think signing Werner is a sign that Fowler might not be ready. We are relying on a bunch of rookies to fix our pass rush though, so adding a vet, although probably just a camp body, is probably a good idea. Competition and depth at every position. Werner and Woodard will be the competition to watch at LEO, and I expect Fowler and Ngakoue to be the Main LEOS in the rotation along with Davis who is versatile enough to play all over the defensive line. And Fowler might not come in right away and be Khalil Mack, but he is very disruptive, and I expect he will be disruptive, regardless if he gets the sacks. Alualu is a decent player, but I wouldn't count him as "disruptive".

I think Malik will transition very easily, as I think it's one of the easiest transitions for a veteran player from free agency. He will be asked to Play 3T, and to beat his man when rushing the passer. He will be fine. Marks is questionable, and I don't think he will ever return to 2014 form, but he's a leader and good as depth and a rotational guy.

Overall, I worry about our pass rush because we do have a lot of youth there, but overall, the defensive line should be the strength of this defense, and one of the stronger groups on the entire team (along with WR). We have the horses to push the interior of the pocket, which should allow Fowler to be effective and disruptive.

I guess I am biased because Dante Fowler JR was never the pick I had wanted last year ( i was expecting Leo Williams) but maybe in time Fowler will be the better athlete... i dunno

I'm in the same boat as I wanted Amari. But I've seen enough from Caldwell to know that he knows talent. Before last season, I didn't think we had a #1 WR on the team. Now, I feel we have two #1 WRs. I hated the Bortles pick initially, but am happy to be wrong.

I don't trust in Gus as much, but Caldwell is the best GM this team has ever had. Fowler is in the physical mold of Freeney(Freeney was more finesse though), which Caldwell says he wants bookends like Indy had with Freeney/Mathis. I see Fowler as coming in and being solid against the run right out of the gate because of the guys around him and because of the style he plays with. Excited to see if he can come in and provide the pass rush that we desperately need.

11 DL? You really think they keep 1/5th of the team at one position? I think Werner and Woodard are in competition for the last spot at DE, not candidates to share it. I doubt all the draft picks make the team this year. Too much talent.

Admittedly it would be tough to field an 11th DL, especially if we keep 3 QBs. I imagine they cut Bryan Walters and go with only 5 WRs and 24 players on offense to make it happen. That said, the emphasis on defense and the number of talented DLs to consider just might tip the scale in Todd Wash's favor. That said, I'm not so sure that Werner and Woodard are in direct competition. Werner strikes me as a pure LEO candidate whereas Woodard is more of a strongside specialist capable of rushing inside if need be, but he's not really LEO material.

Grant in no way, shape, or form is like Sproles.

He's got the same explosive breakout speed meaning he can score from anywhere on the field.

Yea...I seriously doubt he makes the team. Neither did your new kicker. Time for another revision. This time leave the third quarterback off.

I'm thinking Grant is a cut, actually. Not gonna bother revising my original post, but with the touchback at the 25 and kickoffs from the 35, kickoff returners would need to average roughly 30 yards per return to be worthwhile. I don't see that happening, and I think it's reasonably likely that the Jags would just put Greene or D-Rob back there to take a knee.

Given that Grant offers nothing on offense but lost yardage and key fumbles, I think he's gonzo in favor of an extra receiver or defensive lineman.

We have differing opinions on Grant. World class speed? Sure. Is Grant a good football player? I don't think so.

Agreed. I think Robinson is the better overall player, and should make the roster over Grant. I only see us carrying 4 RBS (Yeldon, Ivory, Gray, Robinson).

Some of you may be overlooking what the Jaguars can do with that kind of speed. It's not just his 40-time that's so incredible, but on tape he makes others look like they're standing still. I totally see him breaking out in camp and possibly knocking DRob right off the roster.

I have been rooting for Grant for a long time, and he has shown flashes of his potential like against the Redskins in PreSeason.. sure he messed up with that fumble & that got injured... but I am still hoping he will surprise us all this Preseason..

Gray did look good, and of course TJ Yeldon & Ivory aren't going anywhere...

D-Rob simply has to be more consistent.. he is more of a lock for the 3 RB spot IMO than Gray & Grant though.

That's because they are standing still. As soon as one of them moves and touches him, he fumbles.

He's actually known for having good hands and can catch the ball. I don't believe fumbling is really an issue for him, and if it is, that's teachable.

You have Skuta playing weak side and Evans starting at SS?

Again, it's more about the numbers than a depth chart, although don't say you'd actually be shocked if Evans beat out Cyp in camp.

It does look like Skuta is being kept at OTTO with Ryan Davis also moving into the role, so where is Jack playing? Is he even starting, and if so, at OTTO? Or is his role simply to backup at the WILL and MIKE spots. I should probably make a few changes among the front seven. It's confusing to say the least. I'm also wondering with Davis moving if this suggests Malik will be more of a DE with Sen'Derrick at DT as opposed to Malik at DT with Odrick at DE. I'm also wondering if Holmes is being worked at LEO or OTTO. When looking at this like a depth chart, I'm having to wonder who exactly is backing up Odrick and Telvin at the strongside DE spot and at WILL.
