My immediate action would be stay put and assess the situation. Or if able get two of our elderly lady neighbors to their nearby families then figure our stuff out. It's been suggested by many 'experts' to not leave your home or immediate area if you don't absolutely have to because there is guaranteed shelter, food, water source (if you have stores of water or rain barrels), clothing, etc. When the area becomes dangerous is when you leave. This makes sense to me and what they taught us in the Army. We would have our go bags ready and be in touch with happenings by ham radio or the emergency broadcast system though I'm not sure how much I would trust that. An excellent device to have is a weather/emergency radio that works on batteries and is hand cranked which we have.
My in-laws live here so there would be no trip to Colorado. I would hope my parents could get up here from FL since me and my brother live here. We would rather be in a group than alone. I'm conflicted on whether I would stay and help the in-laws, who would not leave their home, or hit the hills to preserve my life and that of my husband. They live 30 miles away so depending on the scenario we may not even be able to get to them. But we're banking on having to go it alone. We have printed maps of our area and locations nearby with water sources marked. Also trails marked in order to stay off of them but within sightline so anyone we see can be observed and decided on whether they're friendlies or not. We have some good binoculars to observe at a distance. Also things learned in the Army. I wish we could afford night vision stuff because they're cool as heck anyway and would be useful. |
