Year 4 of the "rebuild"...Dave Caldwell's talent took us to 3-13

(This post was last modified: 01-01-2017, 08:11 PM by rpr52121.)

Winning in the 4th quarter is only rarely about talent or playmaking. It more often about confidence, mental-fortitude, understanding your system, and making in-game counter moves to shore up weaknesses and expose them in your opponent.

Most of those are instilled or worked on by coaching staff. Rare players are leaders that can lightning rods to a team to do that, but more often you cannot predict a player's response because many have not had hard obstacles or difficulties that they will face coming to the NFL. That is why so many draft picks fail, and why players can change teams and then all of sudden "get it". That is also why the NFL has a high percentage of teams that go from worst-to-first in their divisions. Those teams are not severely lacking in talent. They are lacking in confidence and preparation and that can be changed.

That is why even most of even the "best" GM's/coaches that everyone would sell a kidney to bring to the Jaguars do not get to the Super Bowl or even the playofsf every year, and streaks of consistently just making the playoffs like the Patriots are outliers.

I'm not saying that no matter what that the Jags should keep Dave Caldwell. He is an average GM. But it also means that you don't just get rid of him unless you have a great option with whom to replace him right now.

Quote:Hire bobblehead Gus- Strike one.

Draft Joeckel- Strike two.

Draft Bortles- Strike three.

Yerrrrrr FIRED!!!!

He should be fired. He's just another bad hire by khan. I remember an interview khan did with Peter king after he bought the jags and khan sincerely asked king for advice on hiring a coach. King told the story of chuck knoll and how he wasn't a household name but then became a legend in Pittsburg. King told khan not to focus only on a big name. Unfortunately khan took his advice and hired two green people to rebuild a franchise that needed experienced leadership. Hopefully he gets rid of Dave and hires a veteran gm and coach.

The only thing I see as damning about Caldwell is that Gus wasn't fired last year, and if that was Dave's call then it was a miserably bad one. His drafts have been up and down, but I can live with that. If it was his call to bring Gus back after he showed he's one of the worst coaches of all time then I wouldn't be surprised if Khan can's him, too.

Of course it might have been Khan's decision over Dave, in which case Khan should probably get out of Dave's way and let him hire a decent coach.

Caldwell absolutely deserves to get fired and should've gotten fired.

This influx of talent here isn't as great as some of you think.  Even the Browns have talent and they almost went 0-16.

Danny Shelton, Joe Thomas, Terrelle Pryor,  Joe Haden, Isaiah Crowell, Jamie Collins,

have some young talent in Corey Coleman, Cam Erving, Emmanuel Ogbah...

so just like we name a handful of players that are talented - literally the worst team in the league can say the same

“It’s evident to see how far we’ve come in many aspects of our game, and Gus deserves a lot of credit for that progress. It’s also evident the considerable work that remains to be done to be where we expect to be at this time next season, which is well above where we stand today. And Gus understands that. … “I expect his coaching staff and team to respond favorably to this news in preparation for Houston on Sunday and then begin thinking about what more they can provide next season. We have high ambitions.”

Yep. But Dave Caldwell had his answer on the future direction of the team.

Khan really should have just gone ahead and fired Gus after the Jaguars laid an egg against the Texans even though he had just said he was coming back. It was clear with that game that no one was taking Gus seriously as being in charge.

Short leash.  If this next coaching staff isn't clearly a fit and the turnaround isn't sharp and distinct... with this division being as ripe for the taking, and assuming the talent on this roster is as good as what Dave expected when adding these pieces... the ship should be able to be turned quickly with a well selected staff.

If not, Dave's got to go and quickly.  What else could we be possibly waiting and waiting again and again for?  The cycle must be broken.  We can't keep "waiting" and "hoping" positive change will come.

I think this division won't be ripe for the taking much longer.

The Titans have built a very solid team, and have their QB.  Mariota looks like the real deal and continues to improve.  They're picking 5th overall so they can also make a huge impact in the draft, actually a bigger one than we can.

The Colts also have their QB, and I think that by itself gives them a much bigger advantage over us.

The TExans don't have a QB, but their roster is much better than ours.  We are clearly the worst team in this division.  The last 2 years were the years where this division was ripe for the taking for a team like the Jags - but now it's going to be much more difficult.  Oh well.

I like Dave Caldwell, but If I was Shad Khan, he would go. 14-48 is inexcusable and it is tough to convince me that theres a plan thats going to get us winning again under his regime. I truly and disappointed because I thought Dave was the guy to turn this ship around, but it turned out that his ship took us head on to the iceberg.

Start fresh, build off what we have, retool where we are needed but the people making the calls need to be a fresh set of eyes. Hire Coughlin as VP of Football Operations and have him conduct a thorough coaching search.

Those who have been around a while remember TMD. He was actually one who would back up his stance and debate his position. The TWABS don't have the capacity to do that. They just do a driveby troll job and move on to the next one.

They are not worth the time nor response of any respectable poster.
unfortunately they make me miss tmd, never thought I would say that. What ever happen to him?

How did we lose on the final drive when the D was killing luck and the receivers all day? Seems intentional for the draft pick or something.

I personally believe the 2-12 record falls on Gus. Im excited to see what we do this offseason and next season. I dont want Dave to be let go but if he does I hope for the best for our team.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. Now that Gus has been slaughtered at the altar, some must move on to the next scapegoat to sacrifice. They can't be happy without someone to blame

^^^ This when if Dave is gone, they'll move on to some one else and there will be a new thread every 3 hrs
