Todd Wash Promoted to Defensive Coordinator

Quote:We did play 16 games though.

Checkmate.

The other poster was still wrong. Fewer than 15 games featured good run defense.

He was apart of 2012 Seattle team that rocked.   However Thomas, Sherman, Browner , and chancellor.  Is way better then what we have.

Obviously he made Brandon Browner look better than he is. Browner has been repeatedly named as the worst DB in the NFL.

I made the same observation about Bryon Maxwell. He was part of the LOB, but has been terrible in Philadelphia.

I am a strong believer in needing talented players to succeed as a coach, but these are examples of why the right coach is important.

Quote:If we did that do you think we would have limited the Colts offense to three field goals the next week?

We also scored on defense that day.

Maybe, maybe not. We will never know. But we did know that his defense gave up 42 points to a rookie quarterback that week.

Quote:One top tier FA pass rusher plus healthy Marks/Fowler plus an upgrade at FS and Babich may have looked decent.
Exactly , people are under selling what the DC had to work with this year in terms of pass rush. I mean seriously if anyone thought they were gonna catch lightning in a bottle with Ryan Davis, Andre Branch, the AAARP president in Chris Clemons or anyone else they were mistaken. They made the mistake of putting all their eggs in the Dante Fowler Jr basket , I doubt that happens again this year.

3 fumbles and 1 recovery and 3 int's certainly not the worst in NFL.

LOL Actually not all 42 points came from their offense. Tennessee's last touchdown was our center's fault.

O2's right.  A big piece of the scheme is that a base 4 can create pressure.  It relies on a LEO, and sometimes OTTO, rush, which hasn't worked here as our guys in those roles have &%t$(ed.  I won't even mention the obvious weaknesses in the secondary over the past 3 years.  In my mind, Caldwell is getting out of the debate a little too clean, as he has had a boatload of cash/cap that he hasn't spent over the same period.  I understand the large cap space now is advantageous, but it is naïve to believe it hasn't hurt us over the past few years.

Quote:No reason to fire Babich If everyone is saying "well yea, when we get better players this year then Wash will do well."

Three years of [BLEEP] defense means someone will get fired regardless. Can't hAve a season like that in year 3 and not. On top of that, Babich hasn't done well anywhere he's called plays or had control. Our defense also had many mental mistakes and communication errors, which are on Babich.

Apologies. 35 points*. The point remains.

Yes I did notice one of our major issues on defense is penalties keeping opponent drives alive. It happened against the Colts at Indy and Titans at home. Both drives ended in TDs and should have resulted in punts. The defense did it often in 2015; those are just the two drives that stand out to me.

Quote:Who did Gus Bradley interview to satisfy the Rooney Rule?
The Rooney Rule does not apply to coordinator or position coach hires. Only head coaches and GMs/"final say" decision-makers are subject to it.

We still need a new/good DB's coach. That is where the team is weakest in seeing positive results. Its no wonder Gus interviewed like 3 former DB coaches for the coordinator job. Jimmies and Joes, yo. With better personnel, Coach Todd will be fine. He will do a fine job, I do believe.

Some here may like this quote from O'Halloran on Wash and what he may bring to our defense:

Quote:

Wash and Bradley are often confused for each other by the broadcast television cameras on game day. Aren’t they the same philosophically?

<p style="font-size:16px;font-family:Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;color:rgb(51,51,51);">Not so fast. Bradley has several strong personalities on his coaching staff and Wash and Walker in particular haven’t been afraid to challenge him. I expect the Jaguars under Wash to have a more diverse pressure scheme and also be more aggressive in their coverages instead of playing so much zone to prevent the big play. And this is where Wash won’t be Bob Babich Lite. Plus, I think Bradley will give Wash more latitude in making week-to-week game-plan changes.
