I can't believe what I'm reading here.  Ron Littlepage supports this proposal, and his logic is right in line with what I've been thinking.

 

He sees the benefit to the city as overriding anything else, and as he points out, this is where the money is required to be spent by state law.  It's not taking away from any essential services.

It was just in the news the other day that the stage cover at Metro Park has deteriorated to the point where they've had to basically close the stage until they can figure out how to fix it.  This new amphitheater may relegate that to being incorporated into the Shipyard project for redevelopment.

They don't.  If you look at the comments sections where this is discussed, or even in this very thread, there are those who somehow think this impacts police, libraries, fire fighters, and schools.  Under state law, bed taxes can't be used for the general fund stuff, but you'll never get that through to them.

I was pretty shocked when I read that as well.  To put it mildly, Ron Littlepage isn't the "sharpest tool in the shed" at the TU.

This man is going to single handedly make our city a big deal. I loved the Weavers, but I didn't realize an NFL owner could do all of these things.

Wayne Weaver will Forever Be Entrinched, BUT Shad Khan is taking it to another level. An level that All NFL owners will marvel at. I feel that as he has visited other NFL venues, his vision of Jacksonville continues to manifest. All that's needed to make his vision(s) come to fruition is City Council...

Bed Tax, Hotel Tax... Yadada, Yadada... I sincerely agree that this taxing revenue can and will enhance our stadium along w/the Ship Yard property...

This is all great, and I look forward to our city growing. But crowning Khan is premature. It's business, theres eventual profit here.

The Weavers are true philanthropists, although they never subscribed to the go big or go home philosophy.

The practice facility, locker rooms, weight room are all nice, and the team is improving. But until there's a home playoff game,IMO, this is average chassis getting a Rolls Royce body.

Hopefully the team grows as its surroundings are. I'm optimistic it will.

The investments that he made into the stadium that the city owns helps the city.

Yea, the Intuition Ale brewery going in next to the stadium is going to be a big hit before and after any event.  Did I read that Bold Bean was going in near there too, or am I imagining that?

Hmmm....mixed feelings about it.

 

On the one hand, it seems like a great idea for Jacksonville, especially if these are reasonably known artists.  If the ones who would book the St. Aug Amphitheater (i.e. Michael McDonald) would book this facility before Jaguars games, it would be a great atmosphere...almost like a mini Super Bowl every Sunday.  25 concerts a year would provide entertainment options.

 

On the other hand, it seems gimmicky to a degree.  I'd like the Jaguars to be team enough to attract fans down to the stadium without the extra stuff.  But when this team starts winning, the stadium experience will be complete.

 

And completely INSANE!

 

Nevertheless, despite my apprehensions, I think it would be an overall positive for Jacksonville, just like everything else Khan has proposed.

 

The way I see it...keep him happy, keep the team here.
